I'm not rich. The retainer I have paid to a business attorney and her suggested attorney to cover other stuff other than my business stuff, cost me $2000 each. I speak to the non-business guy once a year and have used him once in a decade. It really isn't that big of a deal to have an attorney on some sort of retainer.

For a long time I technically had an attorney.

Got rear ended once in traffic when I stopped at a green light because an ambulance was crossing the intersection. LE buddy of mine gave me the contact info of a personal injury attorney who was good but not a slime ball. He got me covered for the medical shit I had and the cost of repairing my car, most of which simply came from my insurance company BUT if I didn't have an attorney they wouldn't have paid out as much.

About 10 years later my wife got hit in traffic when the interstate had come to a stop during rush but the dickface behind her didn't look up from his phone to notice and hit her at 95 mph. Somehow she only suffered minor tissue damage but the car was destroyed. Same attorney saved our bacon again because the guy that hit her didn't even have liability coverage and was working as a car salesmen and had recently been released from prison.

I always knew if I ever needed a criminal attorney because I was being jammed up for whatever, I could trust him to come through with a referral. He always remained on my "good guy" list of attorneys which can be a short list. His first question to me on my first personal injury instance was "between you and me, how hurt are you?" which told me he wasn't gonna get out in the weeds for a few extra bucks and he still had some integrity.

I thought that the main advantage of saying that you want to speak/ won’t speak until you talk to your lawyer is so that they have to stop asking you questions?

I thought I saw some recent videos that because of the rise of SYG/Castle doctrine that a broad claim after a self defense shooting- “I feared for my life” will start the protections and might keep you from being arrested.

On being arrested, but eventually exonerated- don’t a lot of forms you have to fill out mention arrests- even if you weren’t convicted?

From what I understand, someone isn’t your lawyer until you actual pay them, hence the passing of a dollar.
The Second Amendment ACKNOWLEDGES our right to own and bear arms that are in common use that can be used for lawful purposes. The arms can be restricted ONLY if subject to historical analogue from the founding era or is dangerous (unsafe) AND unusual.

    It's that simple.

Yes, once you ask for a lawyer they have to stop asking questions.

You don't have to pay to have a lawyer; you don't pay a cent to a court-appointed public defender. It's contractual: once someone agrees, that's it.

IIRC "You have the right to remain silent" means you don't have to EVER answer any of their questions, attorney present or not, correct? My wife watches those murder shows on ID Discovery (I swear she's trying to figure out how to off me and get away with it! ) and those detectives kinda get miffed when a suspect invokes that right. You know damned well that most of those low-lifes don't have an attorney.

Bottom line? Unless I'm mistaken, you are never obligated to "talk" to them, regardless of whether you have an attorney present or not. If you had the ghost of freaking F. Lee Bailey sitting next to you then you are still not obligated to talk, right? Sure, you might be seen as "uncooperative" but who cares?
Generally speaking, folks don't have a specific attorney to call, whether it be a criminal defense attorney or estate attorney or whatever unless they've needed their services before. That said, some folks subscribe to attorney services like USCCA as a type of insurance policy.

Most folks don't have any contact with law enforcement outside of a traffic stop. Contact with law enforcement in the context of a crime can be very stressful for average Joe. May not even remember what they said. Unless Qs are something like: What direction did the bad guy flee? What did the bad guy look like? it's not bad policy to otherwise keep thy yap shut.

Officer, please call the paramedics, I am having chest pain.

That is all you say, then sit down if your standing, hold your chest.

This will but you time to burn off the stress.

My doctor and my lawyer agreed on this over a 25 year scotch and some Great Dominican Rum along with Dominican cigars.

Yet again, we have a legal system, not a justice system. Know the difference.

There is a local firearms and tactics trainer who is a 25+ year LEO who says the same exact thing in his classes.
