An ammo Q for a special course

    Guys,

In April, I will have the privilege of attending the U.S. Service Rifle Small Arms Firing School (SAFS). It is not a tactical carbine class. It is a class that focuses on marksmanship...and learning to shoot from the three positions.

Shooters cannot use the M4. Luckily for me, one of my rifles meets their requirements...Colt Match Target HBAR 20". (1/7 twist)

The best ammo I have is Federal XM193...but what should I get? I am unfamiliar with "match grade" stuff.

What ammo do you gentlemen suggest I get for this course?

In the 3 Day SPR Sniper Course I attended back in October I used Blackhills 77gr. Match Ammo and it did a fantastic job. I was hitting targets out to just over 900 yds. Obviously we weren't worried about groups, but the ammo performed good.

Also, you may want to see what Hornady has in the .MIL/ LE line of ammo. If you are .MIL/ LE or DoD contractor you can qualify for the LE price schedule.

If you are going to do High Power, I would suggest either start loading your own or at least begin with a load that you will use across the course. Maybe some Black Hills 69 or 75 grain. You will find that if you do take up that discipline, you will use a load for 2 and 3 and another for the 600(probably single load 80-90 grain)

I haven't shot the PP 69 or 75 grain yet, have some, just need my rifle in.

If this course is short range, just use the 55 grain. Where the good match stuff comes in, either bought or loaded is when you can tell the difference between it and the ball ammo.
