DUMBEST things overheard at the gun store.

The guy (a former cop) who taught the beginner's handgun course at the local gun store/indoor range swore by the .32 that he CCW'd.

I recall him saying, at least three times throughout the class, "I know people don't think that the .32 is much, but I guarantee that I'll drop any bad guy with two center mass shots".

Man, I'm glad I didn't listen to his ass and bought a Glock 17 for my first gun.

Was at a gun show the other week and there were tons of people there. The restrooms sucked and I had too much liquid that day. I had to wait in line like I was at a Major League Baseball game. There was a guy about 4 in front of me waiting. He was holding a Mosin Nagant revolver that he had just purchased. He decided to take the next open spot which was a stall instead of a urinal. As he closed the door and about 5 seconds or so passed, his voice bellowed from the stall..... " God damnit! I got cosmoline on my penis!"
I just about pissed my pants!

Okay. I'm sure they exist, that's why I specified "in person".

I spend all day being told by 75 year old men how the Glock is an unsafe piece of garbage that couldn't hurt a fly, and that what is really needed is Taurus because it has a safety and they make it in .45ACP. (The fact that Glock makes several .45ACP pistols seems irrelevant.)

That, or they're convinced "a .380ACP kicks too much" and they want something in .25ACP.... because you don't want to kill the bad guy after all, just scare him away.

Just because you know how to use the tool you were supplied and trained in the use of does not make you even the least bit knowledgeable about firearms as a whole. It also doesn't mean they have the fundamental understanding of physics that is necessary to comprehend that a .45ACP to the hand doesn't send people flying head over heels.

Nobody likes ignorant know-it-alls, regardless of age. But, to say something like "I've never seen anybody over 50 that knows anything about guns" is pretty silly.

It would be like those old, ignorant farts saying "Anybody under 19 hasn't been wiping their own ass long enough to know anything yet."

My experience has been different.

When I was young, many an "old timer" took the time to teach and work with me. Many were impressed with what I had been able to learn so far.

As I've gotten older, I've worked with a lot of younger shooters. I don't make such assumptions about them and I've met a lot of talented individuals.

Perhaps it is the mindset that you bring which is causing folks to be dismissive. I know I've met both the young guys who don't know shit but think they know everything and the old guys who think they know everything and nobody else knows shit, but I'm not gonna lump everyone else in with them. I just try and avoid such people because they are generally not interested in teaching or learning.
