    Why a stubby VFG?

Why a stubby? And how do you use it differently than a full length VFG?

Most shooters use a stubby as an "index point" rather than something to hold onto - YMMV.

Because I don't hold my VFG like I'm trying to choke a chicken.

In doing so, only the bottom two or three fingers are on the VFG, with my thumb high. So a regular length VFG has an inch or more of wasted space hanging off of the rail, waiting to bang into something. A stubby gets rid of that wasted space and streamlines the foreend somewhat. This could be significant when shooting over barricades or similar.
    Principles matter.

Exactly, here's a pic of me shooting my 10" gun showing what subzero is saying.

I went from full, to stubby, to none.

but, on certain guns with rails and lights, I still have the stubby and still use it. What led to the stubby was guys hands getting up higher and a few people chopped them off to get rid of the extra length they weren't using.

Rob, just out of curiosity, can you describe how your practice developed/changed and eventually led to "none"? I currently have none on 2 of my rifles (18" and 20" barrels), but last Fall added a stubby to my Sabre middy. So far I've had mixed results (some accuracy issues that were not there before), and am trying to figure out if I'd be better off going back to none, or if I need to buy a better quality or different type of VFG.
