Your ears will be ringing for several hours. (I'm not actually advocating that, BTW). Now think about when you're out hunting. When you see that big bull elk (or whatever it is you've been looking for) and touch off a shot or two you probably won't even hear the shot. Your ear detects it, of course, but it damps it down to help prevent damage.
