I wouldn't repeat the decision (as I have zero application for a SOCOM profile barrel), but my CMMG SOCOM 14.5" barrel really does shoot.

Back from the dead YET AGAIN!

So, if a standard profile 16in Colt 6920 barrel weighs 1 lb 12 oz and the 14.5in SOCOM barrel weighs 1 lb 13 oz, what is the big deal with the weight gain?

I do not know about any of you out there but when I handled a 6920 with the 14.5in barrel and one with a 16in barrel, it made a world of difference ...to me at least.

If the information is correct, 1 oz should make very little difference and I would gladly trade 1oz extra weight if I can shave off 1.5in from the barrel. Of course, if I could find a standard profile barrel that would be even better. Anyway, what say you?

It should be more like a 4 ounce difference.

No, I am talking about a 14.5in SOCOM barrel vs. a 16in 6920 barrel.

14.5in SOCOM barrel 1lb 13 oz
14.5in M4 barrel 1lb 9oz
16in 6920 barrel 1lb 12oz

The 4oz difference is between the two 14.5 in barrels (SOCOM and M4), the 6920 barrel is heavier than the 14.5 in Standard contour M4 barrel even though the contour is the same, simply because it is longer.

The top rifle has a Colt SOCOM barrel; the bottom has a cut down 6920 barrel to 14.5". I really like the SOCOM barrel. I personally don't feel a difference, and I carried a M-4 for work. Then again, my M-4 with standard 14.5" barrel was not as light as my old issued AUG or an MP-5.

Two weeks ago I had the opportunity to fire an H&K 416 with 10.4 inch barrel for a full day. That rifle is very front heavy even with the short barrel, so for those the complain about the SOCOM's weight should try carrying the H&K a full day
