Any Reason to Choose Glock 17 over 34?

I currently have a Gen 2 G19 and Gen 3 G17. Generally, the 17 (w/light) is my HD/travel pistol and my G19 is my carry pistol.

Does the G17 have any advantage over the G34 other than being .8" shorter and an ounce lighter? I feel the 17 and 19 are so close together that having both does not make a lot of sense, but I like having the light on a longer pistol. I think I would enjoy the 34 at the range.

If I replace it, the G17 will be passed to one of my sons. Ironically, my current G17 is a replacement for the G17 I gave to another son.

    Thanks

    Andy

Only other thing I can think of is price, if that’s an issue. 34’s cost more.

    1) If you are ever going to suppress it, I would not get the 34. Not because it can't be done, but because it turns into a yardstick. I had a suppressed 41 and it was stupid.
    2) If you want to add an optic, the 17 is available in Gens 3/4/5 without the MOS cut (this allows you to have a direct milled).
The Gen 5 34 is ONLY available with the MOS cut, so you must use plate to add an optic (or the open emitter solar only Holosun), or find a Gen3/4 without the MOS cut.
    3) The 17 can achieve similar barrel lengths to the 34 with an extended barrel. Or even an extended comp'd barrel.

At this point, unless you have shot them side by side, and prefer the recoil characteristics of the 34, the 17 on paper, makes more sense.

If you're running irons, get a 34. If you've accepted 2024 and have a dot, a shorter slide offers more advantages.

Red dots are a fad like big collars and bell bottoms

Check out how the G34 “feels” in your hands. The bit longer slide of the G34 might “feel” a bit less balanced. You might love it.
Another choice I would check is the G47, if you want to replace your G17 with one that gives you a few options.

I don’t care for the open slide on the 34 for anything other than a gaming gun.

I agree that the G34 and G47 MOS models should be considered. They do offer options that non-MOS versions do not. I have a multitude of Glocks, including a G17, but I opted to get a G34 MOS and G47 MOS for the very fact that they offer the opportunity to mount an optic. With an optic and weaponlight, they make great HD/SHTF pistols.

The G34 Gen 5 no longer has the slide cutout above the barrel. Only the prior Gen 3/4 models do.

I remember C4IGrant shared the same concern here some years ago so you are in good company.

As pointed out, the Gen 5 guns have a closed slide, but there are more than enough uniformed 34 and 35 users to put that worry to rest for me.
