Why do some users on here have Arabic in their signatures? I took that picture at the Kotel while I was there and thought it looked cool...

Cool off, no one has said we're anti Israeli or anything of the sort.

My information about the level of training and how hard those guys are on their gear comes from top trainers who have worked with the Israelis.

Hell, there's a reason why "Marine Proof" or "Joe Proof", "GI Proof" are in our lexicon, troops are hard on their gear, just some are harder than others, and some have better training than others.

I'm not heated...(laugh) and I'm really refering to a few commentors...as far as I've seen, there aren't any anti-Israel comments in here.

I love the IDF and what they stand for but that group waiting to go in the building look a little ratty and non-uniform ?
Couple of thoughts (having been to Israel & talked with those who are IDF - i.e. all able bodied citizens).

-empty chambers: yes, it is to prevent NDs. Why no reliance on all those manual safeties? Because, since it was formed in 1948, Israel has had to deal with DOZENS of different small arms systems (some without any manual safety) and conscripts from DOZENS of countries speaking as many native languages.

Question: how are you going to effectively train all such soldiers to carry weapons in public 24/7 without NDs? Manual safeties? Please. Impossible. It would not work for Israel.

Answer: empty chamber/ magazine out is the ONLY safe way to do it uniformly accorss all those weapon systems. Think about it. I think you will agree.

Besides, I crossed the land border at a check point into Jordan & saw different rules in effect there: they had magazines in the weapons. I seem to recall seeing the same at the exit get of the airport in Tel Aviv.

Standardization: I saw uniforms for sale at a mall in Jerusalem - the capital. Apparently the IDF either buy their own or can buy extras. Not all of them match exactly. Who cares if average IDF troops (ie defensive reservists) don't exactly match? Does that REALLY matter? Apparently not.

    Practice:

All IDF are competent & have recieved good basic training from what I saw. The elite folks train quite a bit more apparently & from what I have heard, they all train hard since their survival counts on it. Look at their track record; they seem to have figured out what is important and what "works."

The arabic is "kafir" meaning "infidel" and it isn't really because we are sympathetic to arabs or islam.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

What would you like to know? We have several firearms classes in Canada and restricted firearms (includes handguns and many black rifles that were available in the 1990s) can only be shot at a legal shooting range.

The AR is in this class.

The Tavor is the legal equivalent of a break-action single-barrel shotgun here so they are pretty popular with guys who want a handy bush rifle and don't mind the usual bullpup issues. Also, since we also regulate on the basis of barrel length (18.5" is the critical cutoff) the Tavor is doubly popular because the whole package is relatively compact, even with an 18.5" barrel.

I have simplified the laws greatly and go in to enormous detail if you really want but that is the gist. As such I have glossed over a bunch of exceptions and mag limits and other issues, so please don't anybody jump in here and scream at me. I could give the full story if anybody really wanted to hear it but a) it's probably not very interesting to non-Canadians and b) it's a major hijack, so if you REALLY want to know, let's have it in another thread.
Full disclosure: I'm the editor of Calibre Magazine, which is Canada's gun magazine. In the past I've done consulting work for different manufacturers and OEM suppliers, but not currently. M4C's disclosure policy doesn't seem to cover me but we do have advertisers, although I don't handle that side of things and in general I do not know who is paying us at any given time.

I was just explaining what it was, especially since there seemed the possibility that you believed it showed some kind of deference to arab culture.

I do show deference by having an Israeli flag as my avatar...As Allied forces, employers, friends, and family.
