I remember back in the late 1970s, there was a Sergeant in my Marine Corps unit that had a personally owned Colt carbine. I never really paid any attention as to which model it was. Most likely it was a SP1 model. He used to use it on some of our training missions. In those days, a carbine was one of the coolest types of weapons to own. These days, no so much as nearly every Tom, Dick, and Harry owns one. It is still cool to own the older SP1 Sporters and Carbines.

I am at a loss. Which is the Model 729? The M4 is the Model 920 and the M4A1 is the Model 921.

The 728 & 729 were auto and burst models of the M16A2 Carbine. 14.5" M4 barrels. I've managed to clone the XM4 with a A2 rear sight. But the 728/729 had a A1 rear sight and some had heavy barrels and some had M4 type. Realistically they issued many early M4s with A1 rear sights. This often caused confusion with earlier variants. I have an A1 grip and the big button forward assist on mine with A2 rear sight. It's similar to models seen in the Blackhawk Down era used by some CAG and some Seals.
