You can expect 100% reliable expansion from 50gr TSX to about 75 yards. Most other loads leave the muzzle from barrel that short already under the fragmentation/expansion threshold.
The 50gr Black Hills TSX performs better than 55gr TSX. It's probably your best choice for that barrel length. Just so you know, the expansion threshold is 2,300fps.
All of this comes from Jeff at Black Hills like you said.
The 55gr TSX has an expansion threshold of 1,900fps, so you still have good distance from an 8" barrel. The 70gr TSX has an expansion threshold of 1,800fps, but I have no clue what the muzzle velocity is of any of them from an 8" barrel.
Something like a 55gr Gold Dot might work well too. I'd be happy with any bullet that gives me reliable expansion/fragmentation out to 50 yards from that short of a barrel.
If you can find a TBBC 55gr in 5.56 instead of 223, you'd have another good option.

Proven combat techniques may not be flashy and may require a bit more physical effort on the part of the shooter. Further, they may not win competition matches, but they will help ensure your survival in a shooting or gunfight on the street. ~ Paul Howe
