    Braiding/making a climbing rope?

Anyone have any info on making a 4 braid climbing rope out of standard (cheap) rope?

There is a crossfit article on how to make one, but I'm not a paid subscriber so I cant see it. The Crossfit board feels its a shame that I asked for a "free" copy of the article and I'll probably get banned for life.

I'm looking to make it about 1 1/2" diameter.

    Thanks

What do you mean by "climbing rope" ?
Simply for ascension for physical training or for actual climbing on top rope or protection gear or for jugging and rapping off of? What is its purpose?

Sorry I guess I should have elaborated.

Its for a gym style climbing rope for workouts. I'd like to make one for our "office gym" at work and with all the budget cuts there is no way to buy a "real" one.

I just need to figure out the braiding and how the loop end looks.

Here is the basic 4 strand round braid.

    EDIT:
This shows a closeup of how you splice the loop in.

I have found a cheap alternative is a towel rolled up and taped into a cylinder with masking tape. Throw that over a pull up bar and wha-lah rope work out. And when you break off you dont fall 25 feet.

I would assume that unless you already have a reel of something you can braid you are going to have to buy that. Have a looky looky at this, t'aint to 'spensive and at 50' you'll have some left.

You should be able to find some locally around TPA particularly around the port area.

Just a FYI: ITS Tactical is going to do a "knot of the week" on how to make a climbing rope.
