I also think that recoil has to do with what your used to shooting. I just got a midsize m&p 45. My first time at the range I was a little concerned as the muzzle flip was substantial. The more I have thought about it though I considered the fact that for the past 12 years I've been shooting a .40 on a regular basis as a cop.
The stock m&p grips while very ergonomic are also smooth. I'm used to tru-grip on my gun and with my thumbs forward grip I think this lead to some movement. The other day I shot the m&p again this time wearing grippy gloves. There was a huge difference in control. Muzzle flip was only a little more then my g22.
I also have only shot the m&p with the small insert which the feel could obviously change with different insert sizes. My .2.
While the small insert "feels" good, you may find you have better recoil control and faster shot-to-shot times using the med or large insert...
