    M4 Refinishing Thoughts

Ok I was thinking of having my 14.5" middy sprayed in KG Gun Kote while it's getting the FH pinned. Now my question is if you were me would you: refinish in a solid color (FDE), finish in alternating colors (FDE, Black), or not bother at all? I know I don't "need" it to be done but if it is to be done right (each piece individually) it has to be done before the FH is pinned. What say ye?

All of my AR's are painted so it's hard to say. Why not just paint up when it's finished?

Well first off all I know the KG Kote is good stuff, better than spray paint as far as protecting the parts. I suppose when you boil it down it's for the hell of it mostly I like the FDE color and thought it would be better professionally done. Probibly not much more to it than that.

Maybe get the gun coated in KG Kote Black, then spray whatever color you want?

AK44, good point. I had not thought of that. heck I really only need to get the barrel done from a "protection" standpoint as the other parts are aluminum. I could have the barrel sprayed and do the rest my self. with canned KG Kote from Brownells.

I have had good experience with Cerakote. If applied correctly from a good finisher, it is almost impossible to remove. I have seen Cerakote applied to a buffer tube and after working the stock back and forth, not a scratch. I have not had the same result with Duracoat. FYI, I have no experience with KG.

KG is good stuff. The folks there will explain EVERYTHING about their products. The regular stuff is good (have i on a CZ and Mak) and much better than Duracoat, from what I have read. It must be applied in a special way and baked - that s why it is good. They also make a ceramic based product, and that is because of the sand box conditions.

I'd say FDE, but I don't like the way it looks when a gun is all FDE or coyote brown. It needs some dimension to it, like some lighter and darker tone accents.

Krylon is working just fine on 1,000s of weapons in Iraq & 'stan.
