And the upper is allegedly off of a Colt that could not be brought into California, originally.

I may be wrong (check with scottryan) but Colt barrels including the HBAR models are marked. When I lived in California a friend of mine had a Colt HBAR and it was marked on the barrel Colt HBAR. At least as far as I can remember.

You're probably not wrong...this barrel has no markings unless they're under the barrel nut at the breech of the barrel. Could all of this be fixed with a new barrel extension? I was planning on having the standard feed cuts converted to M4 feeds.

Listen to what your gun is trying to tell you, I don't think this was a 5.56 AR.

With all due respect that video has nothing to do with me or my AR...that looked more like an ammuntion fail than a hardware problem to me...might as well send me the video of the ATF agents saying the gun is not loaded and then shoots himself in the foot...

What is my rifle telling me? What possible reason could you think this was never meant for 5.56?

Put your guns down buddy, that wasn't directed at you. I put that clip and that quote together to show how ones AR may give signs that it was meant to be fed 223 and not 5.56. I don't know if your no-name, no-marking upper is rated for 5.56. Just showing the vid so if it does start giving this type of trouble you will hopfully think back to the link and stop before yours goes boom. Just looking out. We're all friends here, I think.

I had someone send me that same video before...sorry if I seemed edgy. Appreciate the help. What makes the upper receiver no name? I know it doesn't have the cerro forge "key hole" but I have seen several uppers with no forge marks.

You are correct. I have a colt HBAR and very clearly on the barrel it says "C MP 5.56 NATO 1/9"

I hate to link to another forum, but they have some info that might give you a few more places to look for markings to help ID what you have. "What Makes my upper no name?" from what you said earlier about you thought it was a colt that was..... Until you know what it is, I will change my statement from "no-name" to "unidentified"

These are the only markings I can find on the upper...

And before you ask or say anything about it, no, I no longer use para-cord to attach the sling...that changed when I put the RIS on.
