No shit, can you imagine what something like an STG would go for nowadays? Assuming you'd even want to sell it. A buddy of mine came across a couple Type-1's during his second rotation through Iraq, I wanna say '07 or '08. He said he cried when they wouldn't let him bring them back.

Unfortunately I am all too well familiar with the pain of parting with a Type 1.

Don't tell me about leaving stuff behind. Left many good artifacts to included engraved Browning Hi Powers with Saddams initials on them out of his palaces. Then there are the P08s from WWI and WWII.

"The Gun"-- A history of the AK-47

Below is a link to a review of a recently published book by C.J. Chivers (a former Marine Corps officer and Gulf war vet) chronicling the development of the AK-47 and it's impact over the past half century. Thought some folks might find it of interest.

Lest anyone panic that the link is to the Washington Post, the review was written by Mark A. Keefe IV, editor in chief of American Rifleman, a journal of the National Rifle Association.

I just read that article. http://www.esquire.com/features/ak-47-history-1110

Even though the Esquire article doesn't go into too much detail on the AK47, it was still an interesting story.

A few weeks later, Gunnery Sergeant Elrod was walking across a forward operating base near Khe Sanh with his AK-47 slung across his back.

    A lieutenant colonel stopped him.

"Gunny, why the hell are you carrying that?" he asked.

    "Because it works," Elrod replied.

You know, if they'd carve out a 'historical guns' exception to the '68 GCA and the '86 FOPA for all the stuff people find in Afghanistan and Iraq, I bet collectors could damn near pay for the war effort

Picked up Chiver's book The Gun tonight, I'll start on it tomorrow.

    Looks pretty decent.

It's still on my "list". From the PM article it sounds as if Mr. Chivers has conducted the most exhaustive research on the AK to date. Can't wait to read it myself.
