You guys can make little hive mind quips about them all day. When I see a grossly inaccurate or unreliable one in person I'll be convinced that it's "shit".
When making statements about a weapons reliability (any weapon), you have to first realize that your experience is based off of owning or shooting 1-5 guns. This is a very small sampling.

The ideal thing is to take 100 guns, shoot them with the same ammo for say 3,000rds. How many of them made it without a malfunction?

This will give you a much better view of how reliable a gun is.

When did these things start costing $230?

As another hi-point carbine owner I guess I'll chime in with my experience. Mine has not been reliable. It has failures to feed occasionally. Considering the problem seemed to start when I started burning up some old umc, it might be ammo related, however I suspect the mags may be at fault(I really haven't bothered to find out). Other than that, as others said the gun is cheaply made and dissasembly sucks.

The only real niche I can come up for one would be a cheap gun for small game where one wants a little more power than what a .22lr offers. Of course, now that they cost over $200, I can't see them being worth the money at all. Back when they were $160 or so, maybe, but not now.

As far as them being a beater gun, I can't imagine these things could handle very much punishment at all. Personally, I'd rather pick up an old sks for a little more if I wanted a beater gun. No, it's not as small or handy, but at least they work and are pretty durable.

    100 guns x 3,000 rounds each = 300,000 rounds.

    300,000 rounds / 1000 rounds per case = 300 cases.

    300 cases x 200 dollars (I'm being generous) = $60,000 + cost of 100 weapons.

With the logic you've just presented me you are implying that unless an individual has paid a over $100,000 dollars in testing 100 individual firearms he cannot make an educated decision on whether or not that weapon is reliable and durable. I have a more simple and realistic approach: Buy the gun and shoot the shit out of it. If it continues to work as it should without abnormal wear or breakage it's good to go. It doesn't matter if the others don't work, yours does. If it doesn't you're out 250 dollars, at least $150 of which you can regain from resale. So basically you're looking at a 250 dollar investment if it's a good weapon, or a 100 dollar loss if it sucks or you just hate it.

Do be reasonable, we're talking about a range toy here, not an exotic boutique rifle that someone plans on using in combat.

WTF is a range "toy"? I don't look at firearms as toys. I would rather spend 230.00 on a shotugn or more ammo before I'd buy a Hi Point carbine. I think the point Grant is making is the same one we try and convey with AR's.

Product consistency. Yes, your Hi Point may work fine. But, there are others which obviously haven't and don't.

The problem is even if a person just want a gun to punch paper, dirt clods, etc.(the so called "rang toy"), the hi-point sucks at that too. They aren't that enjoyable to shoot and I think ammo costs to much for that purpose anyway. If I want something that I can go have fun shooting I'd much rather have a 10/22(cheaper to shoot and can actually be made into something useful).

I don't disagree. I have no use for a "range toy" and don't look at firearms as such. I have a 10/22 that I bought for my son. It's purpose was to help acquaint him with firearms and would also be used for tasks where an AR wasn't required.

    LMFAO

I can't believe we are even discussing these paperweights on this board!
I think if the choice came down between a Hi-Point firearm in any configuration versus my PDA, I would throw my PDA at the attacker. At least I know that will work reliably.
