A couple months ago we began actual design work on a magazine concept that we’ve wanted to try out for a little over a year. As with any magazine; capacity, style, materials, durability, ease of loading and other factors came into play. What we set out to do was make a magazine that would fill the needs of as many people as possible, whether they are behind enemy lines and need a 10rd mag or looking for added capacity for annihilating mobs of zombie computer monitors at the range.

We have made a couple rapid prototypes and they run terrific. We will receive our final prototype in another week and will start cutting dies. With our patent paperwork filed, we wanted to post some preliminary stuff and see if anything was left out.

Highlights of the magazine include, MIM metal feed lips, stackable clear polycarbonate or opaque 30% glass filled nylon, high or low capacity cores, changeable exterior skins and a unique bullet stack channel for easy loading. While we haven’t set retail, it won’t be much more than our current BHOA magazine.

The MIM feed lips will be nearly indestructible. The lips themselves are half again thicker than our old grey nylon feed lips. There will be zero issues with bending. We have discussed making a strictly economy version of this where we would substitute PPS for steel. PPS is one tough polymer. The added thickness of the lips and the better material should easily make it good for 15-20,000 rounds.

The follower is designed to function by itself as an old style last shot bolt hold open, where the bolt is held open until the magazine is dropped. When used in conjunction with our BHOA it will also be able to activate the host rifles bolt catch giving the shooter true last shot bolt hold open capability.

The high and low capacity cores may be stacked in a number of fashions as seen below. We will offer a variety of springs to be used with various combinations.

There are two ways cores are connected to one another. The first is within the skin itself. For example, to increase the capacity of a 25rd waffle skin mag, a side is removed and a low cap or hi cap core is staked between the steel feed lips and the original core. When reassembled the stacked cores are secured by the skins themselves. The 2nd way is using a coupler, and will most commonly be used with the mag well short skin.

Current plans are to offer cores in two materials. The clear polycarbonate will allow shooters to see how many rounds remain. The biggest disadvantage is lack of chemical resistance. The 30% glass filled nylon offers chemical resistance but is not available in clear.

We have some interesting plans with the skins themselves; we have pictured a couple of the ones planned. You just get to wait and see what is next!

If you have a suggestion for something we can include, let us know. We intend for this to be the best magazine ever produced. Let us know how we can make it better!

Not that I am aware of. This is just another option.

You might be able to make it double stack?

    Bump with prototype pics
As you can see, the mag inserts can be joined togther for increased capacity. The first picture shows a 25 round joined to a 10 round for 35 total rounds.

Can you post some of the 25rnd mag that fits flush? I'm intrigued by the design, are they lighter than the grey ones CMMG makes? A ready-mag type coupler might be a good accessory... how about rubber base plates, something low impact? how about a ranger type baseplate also?

CMMG tells me they are lighter weight than the older mags. Pics of the flush fit will be coming.
Ranger plates ect. will be an option. Since these are modular, adaptable mags, there will be many options for them.
The ones pictured are the first prototype. They are not in production yet. CMMG is shooting for the end of the month.

These look pretty cool Shadow! When are you going to get a prototype to test?

Probably test it by the end of the month.
I talked to one of the engineers today. Man, these guys just don't ever rest.
