How great of a training aid would you say using airsoft is, as opposed to live fire?

I look at it as supplemental. NOT a replacement.

For working on fundamentals, sight picture, etc. it's a decent training aid.

Airsoft is great for FOF which is a good idea for those who carry. I might even consider it a must.
