    But that's just me...

    Might as well get a 10/22. Initial purchase is cheap, and the upgrade options are limitless. Heck it's possible to build a 10/22 that doesn't have a single Ruger part in it

    ================================

    I'm sorry, it is a discontinued model back around 1970 or so. The current model is a 552 but is is nothing like the 550. The 550 is all steel and walnut. You'll see a lot of them beat to heck but if you look around, you can find nice ones for less than $300. It is tube-fed and was the first 22 semi-auto to shoot S, L, LR. You can still find parts pretty easily.

    I've got several but I was showing a buddy my latest one while we were shooting a few months ago. Now he's a freak shot and has a pile of 22 rifles but he fell in love with my 550. After about 15-20 shots, he started flicking 9mm brass in the air and was cacking about 4 out of 5 them with it.

    It is just a stout good ol' gun. I have killed a ton of snakes and blackbirds with one over the years.

    I am going to ignore the price restriction and recommend a S&W M&P 22 AR-15 look-alike. The two that I have have been great.

    As a backup plan, the Ruger 10/22 is usually a decent choice.

    100% agree....spend another $80-100 or so and get the M&P15-22 - mine is fantastic.

    put the $3 bones into your current 10/22 instead of another gun...it would be better money spent unless you steal a winchester 63.

    Marlin 795 or model 60 if you want an accurate out of the box shooter

    10/22 if you want to be able to tinker like an AR

    any of the 300+ bolt actions for supreme accuracy
