Everyone always asks these questions I feel in a "home defense" scenario background. I would not want to set off a 5.56 and certainly not a .308 inside without a supressor.
I think 90% of "homeowners" in a self defense scenario will be served best with a handgun and a good flashlight, preferrably on the pistol.
The other 10% who feel because they live in a rural environment or really want to chase people down the road with an assault rifle blasting away may feel better armed with a M4, etc.
I have a 9mm HK with 15 rounds of +P+ for the night stand and a 12 gauge pump in the closet loaded with 6 rounds of 00 buckshot and 4 slugs on the stock-these two make me warm and fuzzy at night because I live in a heavy populated area.
Now if you choose to carry around a full sized carbine around the 5.56 is a great close range weapon and fast followup shots are great.
The .308 will kill shit dead, period at medium to close range. I agree with the above poster I have shot pigs with FMJ .308 and they fall on their ass right there and die, it is impressive. The 5.56 you better hit them in the head or neck or they will run off-ask me how I know. I shot a 150 lb boar in the shoulder, and side then in the chest head on inside 100 yards with IMI 55 grain 5.56 out of my Colt and he ran off squealing into the bushes never to be found.
I bought my 6.8 after that, and I still like the .308 for anything a bit bigger or tougher, but very few of us are in a war zone where this would be a reality.
