I'll start the Pro Con post by providing that I installed the conversion in my S&W M&P upper. I haven't had a chance to put more rounds through it since day one at the range. I'm guessing that different rifles will have varying success based on fit and function.
Conversion Pros:
cheap kit
cheap ammunition
quick change out from .223 to .22LR and back
easy quick maintanence
high quality from Spike
Conversion Cons:
dirtier (but can install gas tube plug)
don't know long term effect of .003" smaller bullet traveling down bore
I haven't seen the plating flake, but I don't have that many rounds through it
Dedicated Upper Pros:
just swap uppers and shoot
tuned recoil spring for that upper
no gas fouling of chamber (gas tubed blocked or non-existent AFAIK)
maybe more consistant performance
other pros the same as conversion
Dedicated Upper Cons:
cost of whole new upper to shoot .22LR
These are my opinions. I may have missed something. I'll keep plugging away with more .22LR every range visit and post back here my results.
