Unless of course this new version will have a full rail instead of the slick side receiver all while being ~9 lbs, but from the pictures it looks like these will have the slick rails too.

Was the original barrel extension steel?
What was the weight savings from a railed mws to a slick lm8?

Also I can see just the barrel dropping a pound, considering how heavy it is.

w3453l, Yes, the barrel extension is one large hunk of steel.

I am looking forward to these new barrels being released and tested. I think a, much lighter, 16" CL barrel with rifle-length gas system (chopped 18" barrel) would be a nice improvement to the rifle.

From what I understand talking to Jordan at LMT the barrel itself was a lil over 3/4 of a lb lighter. Which doesn't sound to far fetched if the extension is now aluminum and the barrel has been slightly re-profiled. However we'll have to wait n see. Who knows when they will be officially available.

Koshinn, if I remember right it was said that the LM8 was ~6 oz lighter than the original MWS.

Bnana, thank you for letting me know. I'm curious to see how durability of the aluminum extension will compare to the steel extension.

It would also be nice if LMT posted an exact weight for the rifle to put all the assumptions to rest. I'm sure they'll come around to it soon though. Was there any info on when to expect these?

I keep coming close to trying to buy one, but they always improve the models just a little bit each time; at least to me. The only thing I can think of asking for would be key mod or m-lock rail for the slick version. It would just be nice to share consistency with other rails.

The barrel is the same for both and the savings of the new barrel is said to be in the profile and material.

Pelican 1650. You can fit two firearms in it easily (including suppressors, etc.).

Chassis milled by ADCO and the price was right. I like it. It feels like a URX 3.1.
Barrels are (1) lmt 20" CL cut to 16.75" and ball milled by Marvin with KAC MAMS; (2) lmt 20" CL cut to 17.25" and ball milled by Marvin with Surefire 762SS Suppressor adapter attached (reason barrel is 17.25" is that surefire 762SS suppressor is a reflex design and requires 2.75" (3" really) over the barrel so needed to make sure it would clear the gas block).
Having fired both systems back to back, you can definitely feel the the benefit of the MAMS.

What led to the decision to cut to 16.75" down from 20", is that what is recomended with the rifle length gas? I intend to do the same with either a 18" or 20" barrel and wonder which is best to start with.

Don't want to speak out of turn but IIRC he specified that length so his suppressor would clear his gas block when attached to his muzzle device. I have a barrel at Marvins right now getting chopped to 16. Others have done so without issue.

Does Marvin have a website? How do you get in touch with him to dimple a barrel? I've been thinking about having my LMT barrel dimpled.
