The gunsmith got it out. He said it was the first one he'd ever seen break.

I did not, however, asked how he did it. I was too relieved that it actually did come out. He also tried to give me the remainder of the snake, which was about 10 inches long (the barrel was 16", to give an idea of how much it was stretched). It actually broke just before the end of the brass brush portion, as he said that he was pulling out little pieces of brass (seems like he pulled it through). I thought I had all of the brush out, but I guess not.

The rifle is back together now, and is working fine.

    The lesson I've learned:

I'm no longer using boresnakes on my long guns. I'll still use them for pistols though (as someone said that would be easier to fix). If I ever do use them for rifles again, I'll be sure to attach a piece of parachute cord to the back so that I can pull it back through if necessary.

Thanks for sharing your situation. It's sure nice to know what no-goes are and how to avoid them.

Think I will modify my "rifle snakes" to keep this from happening.
Winning may not be everything, but the endorsements are better.

    .

FWIW, if you get the brush part of a healthy Boresnake into the bore, I doubt anyone could pull it out backwards.
I don't use a Boresnake, so it would be a good experiment for someone to try before they actually need to pull it out.

With a brush on a rod, you can pull the inserted brush out IF you twist the rod/brush while you pull it out. Otherwise, you'll pull the handle off of your rod if you can hold the barrel solid enough.

You don't have that luxury of a rod with a Boresnake, so you can't twist it.

    But maybe it's just me...

I'm still amazed that after all this drama you didn't ask him how he got it out.

What a relief. I feel the same way I did when they finally rescued those miners in Chile.
