Building AR15 pistols with carbine reciever extensions

This is how I would do it:

Use a new stripped lower and make sure it's being classified as a pistol in the paperwork. Build it up using a regular RE.

That would give you a pistol only. If you start with a bare lower that is currently being transferred as"other" and install a pistol tube first, then you can go between pistol and rifle, legally. If you install a rifle RE first it must stay a rifle.


ATF&E letter in regards to a carbine buffer tube on a pistol AR.

The end of the letter says having a carbine butt stock "may" be constructive intent. These letters only apply to the person it is addressed to.

On my SBR I use this RE, it allows both SBR and pistol configuration.

Technically a carbine tube used on a pistol is legal. It is however a stupid thing to do if you own any stocks that will fit it. It just invites closer inspection. If you can't afford $25 for a dedicated pistol RE then perhaps you should seek a different hobby.

As far as the kit thing goes, you don't need to stake your RE on for a temporary configuration that is just for fun to begin with. Use a wrench and change the RE!

Closer inspection by whom? AR pistols are ghey to begin with but I don't see where using a standard AR extension is an issue.

Agreed that just about everyone is over thinking all of this, and everyone thinks they know what every cop and lawyer will do. Also everyone still believes the whole "constructive intent" BS.

The only thing that would make it illegal is if you actually put a stock on an AR pistol that wasn't registered as an SBR. Until there's a stock on it then it's not a rifle. Even if you have a stock laying next to an AR pistol with a carbine extension it's still not a rifle.

So quit throwing around what if's and hearsay.
