5.56 Ammo Question...
Hello, I'm brand new to this forum and brand new to the AR platform. For the longest time I felt, and still do to a degree, that the AK & SKS round is a more potent and formidable round. So I never purchased an AR despite the fact that the firearm simply mystified me, its look, accuracy, design and feel are second to none. So when an opportunity to purchase a brand new Colt 6520 for under $1,000.00 became available, I jumped on it. I'm a KISS kind of guy, have always preferred iron sights and the AR doesn't get any more KISS than a 6520.
Okay, so now I have it and love it! But what's the best ammo for self defense purposes? Wal Mart has an ammo can of Federal 5.56 X 45MM 62 grain FMJ Ball ammo 420 rounds on stripper clips with a speed magazine loader for under 135.00 out the door. So for targets and getting familiar with this Colt, that's what I'll be using. But is this a load that you would or should trust to the defense of your family & home?
Remember I'm brand "cherry" new to AR's and the 5.56 (223) round so go easy on me gents!
THANKS!

Buy away, it's good ammo for most of your shooting needs but for home defense I would look into buying a couple of boxes of Win Ranger or Speer soft tipped LE ammo for a maginze for home defense. DocGKR has several threads here on ammo that you should search out and read.

Welcome.
Do a Search for posts by a guy called DocGKR. He's kind of the ObiWan on ammo performance.
Here's one I looked up for you - LINK

I shoot the Speer Gold Dot LE that Grant sells and highly recommend it. Grant is a great source here for all of your AR needs.
