Can truckers now carry weapons in their trucks?

Saw the latest episode of Doomsday Preppers the other night and they did a piece on a truck driver who carried a few firearms with him (Hi-points of all things). When I drove firearms were not allowed in commerical vehicles. Has this changed? Can drivers now carry weapons with them?

Dont know the PC awnser but you can do anything you want as long as you dont get caught(I think allot of guys see it that way). I see allot of drivers carring mostly the over the road guys they dont care about the local laws. Most will tell you cops are for the most part pretty understanding (even in NYC).

As far as i know there isn't any Federal Law prohibiting carrying weapons in a semi-truck. There may be state regulations that prohibit or limit the ability to carry, or a company policy may prohibit it. But Federal Regulations actully allow the firearm to be kept in the semi. (Although the Fed Regs talk about transporting unloaded and not carrying)

The truck driver in the prepper episode is a retired law enforcement officer. I think he mentioned he was an leo for over 20 years. Therefore he may have a permit (hr218) that would allow him to carry a firearm across state lines.

Here is an article I found that discusses this issue.

    In most states, yes.

Also even if the weapon is illegal in a given state, if it is legal at your destination then FOPA should protect you.

Ptetty much. No federal law, but some states do prohibit it. Most companies prohibit it, as do many of the insurance policies of said companies.

Keep in mind commercial vehicles fall under their own set of laws and regulations. So what you are saying here does not always apply.

IIRC he owned the truck cab, so that would qualify as private conveyance.

No it does not. Because of size it will still be licensed as as a commercial vehicle, therefore falling under different set of laws, unless there is a certain exemption for farm use or something like that. Also if it is his he still is supposed to follow the rules of the company that he drives for and most shippers and receivers these days have signs stating "no weapons allowed". Now these things do get ignored and for good reason in many cases, but......

They were 45s for they got the pass....

I know they had lost everything but the rig but you would think they would have gotten better weapons.
