What are the specific differences between the two types of ammunition? What does the X signify? Is one superior to the other?
I know they're both 62 gr steel penetrator 5.56.

No specific difference. The X ammo may not have met a velocity min/max or something. But it can't all be rejected ammo. I mean... there's just too much of it available...
it's even in Walmart in some towns.

I still haven't heard a definitive answer about the federal XM ammo.
I dont think anyone knows.
If it bothers you, then look for IMI or Privi or PMC X-Tac first.
Ill buy whats cheapest (IMI right now)
where is the cheapest place to buy the imi right now?

FWIW, here's what Federal's website says about their XM193:
http://www.federalpremium.com/resources/xm193.aspx• XM193 product is first run, first quality product manufactured at Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for Federal Cartridge and is made to Federal specifications typical for commercial ammunition.
• All XM193 product is the same regardless of the sku or part number. (ie. XM193C is the same as XM193F, XM193CBP and etc…) The only difference is the package configuration.
I don't know if the same description applies to XM855.
