Gas Piston 300 AAC Blackout Upper

Building this new upper for hunting deer now that we can hunt game animals with suppressors in Texas.

Used the Adams Arms Gas Piston kit. Will allow me to turn off the gas for deer hunting to cut down the sound further.

Samson Manufacturing makes these great hand guards that go around the gas piston system for Adams Arms.

AAC Blackout Flash Hider suppressor mount for my 762SD suppressor.

Upper completed. Can't wait to shoot the gun. Will make a great hunting rifle.

If you used a piston so you can make it not cycle, why wouldn't you just use a bolt action?

I did that because I don't always want to have the gas off. For pig hunting or if I see 3 does walk out I want to be able to harvest them all. But I also want to be able to turn it off.

fair enough. Guess there really isn't anything like a switchblock for 300 black right now.

Even of there was I would have still gone piston. I bet the Noveske switchblock would work with BLK. I just prefer piston for suppressed guns because of the gas in the face with DI.

Have you fired the rifle yet? what twist rate barrel is that? I had a PSA 16" upper that was commandeered by an older brother. Am looking into another build and the Wilson combat barrels come in at a nice price point, wanted to know how you liked it.

what barrel is that wilson combat or noveske?very nice build!i believe it`s the first piston 300 blkout i`ve seen.my 300 blackout build is primarily for supersonic ammo,so i went d.i.;but i see your reasons.i love my adcor defense bear elite upper piston driven upper in 556/223,so i`am with you on the piston thing!enjoy and post back about it!

Oh yeah Butter. Jim and the folks at Adams Arms are great guys and gals and they are great supporters of the shooting community. This upper was built for a project I am doing for a gun blog I write for. It will be a lot of fun.

have you shot it yet? couldn't get mine to fully cycle even with the port opened up a bunch, had to switch back to gas.

I don't know of any company who's made a reliable piston .300BLK. The fact that LWRCs .300BLK is direct impingement is a "clue".

Still working on tuning. It runs supersonic ammo fine (suppressed only) but not subs. I have a low mass buffer coming for it today. If that doesn't work I suppose I will have to go back to gas which is pretty disappointing.

After trial and error and tuning it is back to the drawing board. There just doesn't seem to be enough pressure in the round to cycle the bolt with subs even suppressed. Time to pull it back apart and put in a DI system. I will use the Adams kit for a new 5.56 upper.

That is sweet. Hopefully that buffer will help you out and you won't have to change you setup. Best of Luck

Just so everyone knows, this is now a DI gun. Even with low mass buffer and bolt carrier the 300BLK round just doesn't have enough pressure to run a piston gun. I guess I should have noticed that LWRCi's 300BLK upper for their PDW is DI. If LWRCi couldn't make piston work with 300BLK, I am not sure anyone can.
