For a long time I technically had an attorney.
Got rear ended once in traffic when I stopped at a green light because an ambulance was crossing the intersection. LE buddy of mine gave me the contact info of a personal injury attorney who was good but not a slime ball. He got me covered for the medical shit I had and the cost of repairing my car, most of which simply came from my insurance company BUT if I didn't have an attorney they wouldn't have paid out as much.
About 10 years later my wife got hit in traffic when the interstate had come to a stop during rush but the dickface behind her didn't look up from his phone to notice and hit her at 95 mph. Somehow she only suffered minor tissue damage but the car was destroyed. Same attorney saved our bacon again because the guy that hit her didn't even have liability coverage and was working as a car salesmen and had recently been released from prison.
I always knew if I ever needed a criminal attorney because I was being jammed up for whatever, I could trust him to come through with a referral. He always remained on my "good guy" list of attorneys which can be a short list. His first question to me on my first personal injury instance was "between you and me, how hurt are you?" which told me he wasn't gonna get out in the weeds for a few extra bucks and he still had some integrity.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.
Chuck, we miss ya man.
