I was originally going to build the Douglas 18" with a DD 12 M4 rail like I used on my 16" Krieger Recon.
But I got such a good deal on the DD M4 13.5 I couldn't pass it up. It's weight is among the lowest of the longer rails available, less, I think, than the LT 12 rail.

Two more reasons that haven't been mentioned:

1. Protect yourself from a hot barrel.
2. For accuracy reasons, it's better to rest a FF rail on an object than it is to rest the barrel itself. Resting the barrel may cause shifts in point of impact.
