I do believe that it has to do with getting around Cali's laws concerning pistol grips and detachable mags...

It has to do with complying with CA laws, rather than getting around them. Law says if you lose the "evil" features including pistol grip, you can drop mags (even legally owned large capacity mags) with your finger. It's not a loophole or anything.

Good choice in picking a high cap mag over a pistol grip. I see your located in TX though

I got the same rifle through the S&W 40% mil discount. It took about 3 months from when I ordered, but I think it turned out to be a pretty good deal.
