I know this is m4carbine, but... wouldn't an AK 'krink' SBR be better? It wouldn't need the buffer tube, if you have to conceal it under a jacket... Being an SBR you could get a vfg on it...
I think I stated that "outdoors" would be an exception. One reason I'm interested in an SBR is for a back packing rifle. I can throw it, along with 120rds into a back pack for day hikes. If I was on my ATV I would just put it in a utility box mounted on the back. I can certaintly see the need for a compact rifle if you live a long the boarder. Hell, in Florida, in the Ocala National Forrest people trip over meth labs all the time.
The receiver extension is 1.4" shorter and uses a standard endplate and castle nut. A shortened bolt carrier combined with a steel body buffer keeps the reciprocating mass the same as a standard carbine system, with the same amount of buffering weights, H, H2, or H3 and a standard carbine action spring.
The lower does not have a buffer retainer and cannot be shotgunned open. The lower also cannot have an obstructed shelf, the rear lug of the upper has to be able to slide forward for disassembly.
We will also make these as factory AOW's with pistol grip.
AUG with a 16" barrel. Shorter than an SBR without the paperwork.
Here's my thought. They are basically a novelty and serve no real purpose. I can almost guarantee that you will have more success carrying a good handgun with extra mags and getting training. If you really need firepower then get a Glock and some 33rd mags.
Most people will not be able to effectively use a 5.56 AR pistol. They are somewhat cumbersome and crappy to hide. For California people it makes even less sense because of bullet buttons and magazine restrictions.
That's my .03 Eurocents.

AR pistols exist because of the NFA hassles to acquire a SBR.
Some might say the buffer tube is a disadvantage, but to my mind, you can get a cheek weld with the buffer tube. Coupled with a good single point sling and you should be more accurate than a normal pistol, at least for longer range shooting.
Now for Joe civilian who doesn't want to go through the NFA hassle, I doubt he is going to actually need it for much more than range fun or zombies. If the later is the case, I'd rather have a proper carbine.
There are some legal benefits such as being able to CCW one which could be an advantage in states where you cannot have a loaded rifle in your car - an AR pistol, covered under your CCW, maybe ok to stow loaded.
They are fun little guns for those not wanting an NFA firearm, but very limited in the scenarios where they would be preferred over an actual carbine.
