This subject has been hashed out and tested to absurdity on precision forums. You have to evaluate each muzzle device on its own merit. Some devices improve accuracy and some don't. You have to prioritize, accuracy, rise, recoil, flash, concussion, etc. There is no free lunch.

This thread has my interest. I just got an 18" BCM SPR upper that shoots terrible. About like OP's gun. It has an A2 on it, I should take it off and see what happens.

I've got about 150 rounds through it and I haven't broke the MOA mark yet. 1.25-1.5 is all it'll do with MK262. Disappointing as I have a Colt 6920 SOCOM barrel that will handily outshoot it.

This is with a particularly good lot of CBC MK262 that will honestly sling .5moa groups through my bolt rifle with ease.

I just looked at the pictures on a bigger screen. That gun shoots bad either way. Something is wrong with it, the brake just makes it worse.

Do you reload? Some barrels are REALLY picky. Like BAD attention whore picky. Some combinations you'd not think to be problematic just are awful but then when you change up the bullet or powder it's like you went from Rosie O'Donnell to Claudia Schiffer. Run some 75gr & 68gr Hornady BTHP and ELD, 77gr & 69gr Nosler CC and RDF, Berger, Lapua Scenar, etc. w/ 8208 XBR, CFE223, AR Comp, with each. It may very well surprise you which one it likes--if the answer was always the same one for everyone, the others would sell zero, right?

So maybe I missed it but what are specific muzzle devices that don't effect accuracy?

ALL muzzle devices have an effect on bullet placement. They will affect the barrel harmonics among other things...

At various levels of precision rifle, the conversations change. The benchrest guys thread their muzzles so there's more meat left - the belief is that something like 1/2x28 for .22 cal or 5/8x24 for .30 cal leaves the muzzle too thin, making it susceptible to "squeeze" from the torque of the muzzle device and negatively impacting accuracy. Thus far, my 5/8x24 threaded rifles have done of them what I've asked, so I don't know at what level this becomes relevant.

Interesting reading so far--while I have nothing to add to the discussion, tagging to subscribe since I'm planning a couple Gear Reviews on muzzle devices that I need to develop a testing protocol for.

    Right now, I'm looking at...
--10.3" Crane-spec Mk18: bare, bare + Indian Creek BFD, A2 FH, A2 + BFD, Precision Armament AFAB, AFAB + BFD
--16" Mid: bare, bare + BFD, A2 FH, A2 + BFD, AFAB, AFAB + BFD
Two ten-round groups per configuration, total 24 groups or 240 rounds. (Considering making it three so I have Best-Middle-Worst cases, 360 rounds.) Question is, what's a good number of rounds to seat each MD between "shoots for score"?

Criteria to evaluate, I'm thinking lateral noise, downrange noise, lateral flash, downrange flash and group size, assuming I can arrange facilities and equipment.

So in your opinions what would be the best MD foe an 18" SPR with a .223 wylde chamber, rifle gas? I have a standard colt a2 on it right now but would like to put a QD MD for my Sandmam K (when it get out of mgs jail). I have heard that a brake acts as a sacrificial first baffle, is this correct and if so, would it really make any difference on an 18"? If not I think I'd rather go with a FH... whatcha guys think?

    Thanks,
    Darrin

My next build, a Noveske 18" medcon spr to be started in the next few days will initially sport an A2. If I deviate from that I will likely gravitate towards a Surefire Socom brake or FH for a can.

Best accuracy from a FH is a three prong style. MSTN (PRI) makes a brake designed to minimize its' negative impact (on accuracy).
