Would one not be allowed to produce proper documentation within a reasonable period of time? Having to carry papers for display on request sounds too strict to me.

A reasonable period of time is generally at the police station after confiscation, if they care. The key there is "if they care." YMMV.
I keep copies with my rifles to avoid the potential headache.
The real reason I keep copies of paperwork for my can and my SBR is to show people. I get the "thought those were hard to get" type comments all the time. If they show real interest in how it is done, I pull out my copies and show them how simple of a form it really is. I keep full sized copies in my grip.
I also do not have to worry too much up here. They won't worry about me when the guy next to me has a MP5SD, or an M2 (yes the big ma duece) and a Thompson.

I had mine tattooed on my back like Max Cady in Cape Fear. I found it was the most practical method to show immediate proof of ownership.

You're not really required to be able to prove it on the side of the road...it just saves hassle if you run into a cop who doesn't understand the law. In this day and age in most places while NFA items are not really common, they aren't exactly exotic either. Much different than it was even ten years ago.
It's also my understanding that if you have an LEO busting your balls you can tell him to call the NFA branch of the ATF with your serial numbers and have them verify for you.
I have copies...but I almost always forget them. If I get jammed up I'm going out like Randy.

Scanned them to pdf and emailed to myself. Accessible on my phone at any time. Never been asked though.
