Czechpoint VZ's and muzzle brakes...

I probably won't get one but curious. Who has taken their CP VZ an gotten a brake put on? Mine has the ubiquitous muzzle cap - nice, but not a brake or a flash hider.

Here is a very naive question - couldn't a competent person with a drill press drill some holes in the cap and make one?

I have not, mainly because the barrel on mine is plenty long already for reasons relating to its legal status in Canada.

But I have shot plenty with various brakes attached. Some are very good, for sure. Clobbersaurus will hopefully drop in on this thread...I believe he has extensive experience with VZ muzzle brakes.

I would imagine that a competent person with a drill press could make the requisite holes in the barrel cap, but whether you'd be able to time it well enough to make a significant improvement I couldn't say. If you don't value the cap, and you have the time, you could certainly give it a try but in terms of effect, there are enough good brakes out there for relatively little money that personally I wouldn't screw around with it.

But then I'm a bit lazy like that.

IIRC, both Templar and JOHNO both have military brakes on theirs.

Course they have bayo lugs too.

I just took a look at some pics of the Czechpoint VZ's. Is the muzzle cap removable or is it welded/pinned to meet OAL restrictions?

If you are able to get to the threads underneath the cap, there are some very good muzzle brakes available for the VZ. I've shot several of them and depending on your needs you should be able to find one that does exactly what you want. I suppose if the threads are undamaged, you could have an aftermarket brake pinned on to meet OAL restrictions. Keep in mind that the VZ thread pattern is different than the AK.

I would caution against having the barrel cap altered unless it's by someone who builds muzzle brakes or comps for a living. You can easily fuck it up, and it's not as easy as drilling holes in the device.

EDIT: Sorry, I just noticed that you are the cheek slap guy from the other thread. As I mentioned in my other thread I had an issue with cheek slap with a specific type of comp I used on my VZ. You may want to try changing your stock first before you mess with muzzle brakes or comps. If the muzzle brake or comp is particularly efficient it may accentuate the cheek slap issue.

I thought the cap was welded in two places. Easier to swap barrels perhaps?

I don't think that the CP VZ's are amenable to an easy changeout. They are welded solidly in order to be VERY permanent. Oh well.

I am trying a more shoulder oriented hold on the VZ for cheek slap reduction. Worked OK on the bench. A little worse standing. I'll continue - you must avoid the same type of hold one uses on the M4, where recoil is minimal. I am also in the process of getting a folding stock, so we'll see how that works.
