Anyone ever buy a shipping container?

Looking to grab one for use as a storage shed. What's a reasonable cost, etc.?

I have a friend that owns a scrap yard/used tractors business. I think he has one. I'll ask him for you.

We had a bunch when I used to work in NY. They are worth they're weight in gold.

Depending on exactly what you are looking to do with it (not sure if you are thinking SHTF here) but a good alternative is also used box truck bodies. We used to get them for $400-$700 depending on size and condition. A 24' can store a TON of stuff.

The steel units in your original question are by far the better choice though. All of them can be gotten into by simply cutting the lock, but the sides on the truck bodies can be smashed into by a willing thief. As well, the steel units do better when placed on uneven ground as they flex much less. Lastly, anyone with scrap metal and a welder can quickly repair a steel container.

Some of these companies may work for you...

http://www.google.com/search?q=price...iw=480&bih=269

One of the contracting companies I was working for was buying the 30' conexes at around 2,000 or so used. I don't remember the company they used though.

Edited to add: That price was refurbed and painted fresh.

.

I've bought two of them for work.

I selected a nice used 40' a few years ago for $3500 delivered about 60 miles. My guys built stud walls and ceiling joists, added fiberglass insulation. We ran conduit in the walls, cut a hole in the side for a window unit, put T-111 on the ceiling and walls, built work benches, and painted the floor. It has been perfect for 5-years.

I just bought a new 20' for $4400 delivered about 80 miles a few months ago. It was made in China but seems well made. We added metal stud walls and ceiling joists, styrofoam blown in, 5/8" CDX walls & ceiling, with painted corrugated galvalume? screwed over the CDX, with external wiring in conduit. I had a contractor cut two doors and two window units in it. It is to be used as an analyzer building. I believe we will be able to insulate it with a couple of ice cubes, that foam is fine.

For my personal use, I would buy a good use one, build stud inside walls, blow styrofoam in, and cover with T-111. I would have one if my neighborhood restriction would allow it but they don't.

But maybe it's just me...
