Learn how to field strip your weapon. I'm stunned at the amount of people who own AR15s that don't take them apart, or that ones that do who are afraid to pull out the bolt or extractor.

Without knowing what your intended use is, or where your current skill level is at, its hard to say anything else.

Just got my first AR (well, actually just the upper so far), and was thinking it would be a pain to field strip.....coming from the AK world, where stripping one down is cake. But I was surprised at how easy it is.

To the OP, check out this video, it's what I watched to field strip mine the day I got it. It's simple and to the point, great for new guys (like me).

Congrats on your M&P-15. Nice choice. Feed it well, tuck it in at night and enjoy your foray into the AR-15 world.

Buds Gun Shop.com has S&W M&P 15 or,s for $789.00 delivered. that would have been a lot of extra $$ for goodies.

He's buying the "T" model which does cost quite a bit more.

Congrats and welcome. If I'm not mistaken, he got an M&P15T (Tactical) which is a good value VS the plain Jane one that you're probably describing. It comes with all the normal upgrades we normally pay way more for like a quality FF Rail and folding sights. IMHO, it save him lots of cash on after market add ons and money well spent.

That's a fair price for the T model.

AR's aren't really complicated. Finnicky in some ways yes, but there are plenty of other rifles (and even pistols) with more complex innards.

So don't be afraid to take it down and figure out the different components. You can't really hurt anything so long as you don't force or bang on stuff.

Also don't be afraid to ask here things like: What's the little spring doohickie behind the lever thingie?

Congrats, have fun, and stay safe.
