SHOT 2009 hotel reservation tip

I was cruising the SHOT show's official hotel reservation site, and saw that most of the hotels were hovering in the $100/night range, but that many of the hotels right near the convention center were not available.

So I did a google map search, and came up with the [url=http://www.redroof.com/reservations/inn_details.asp?num=200Red Roof Inn Convention Center[/url] which is not on the SHOT website but is .6 miles from the convention center. They had rooms available for $125/night and the hotel is well within walking distance of the show. here is a link to the google map of the location.

I went ahead and made a reservation for two nights. The hotel could very well be a huge dump, but I have no intention of doing anything more than sleeping there, and being able to walk to and from the show is extremely important to me.

so, just a tip, look around the area for other hotels as the SHOT reservations site may not be the only resource.

I was just up on their site and it looks like its in Orlando this year, and under Travel Desk it has a list of local hotels with prices.

Correct.

What I'm telling you is that the list on their site does not include all the hotels in the area, and that there are other options not on that list.

Last year when we went to Orlando for SHOT we stayed at the Shingle Creek. The boss booked and payed for but I'm sure it was a lot. Very nice place.

Also for those who don't mind having to use a car to get from the Convention Center to and from their hotel, there are tons of hotels in the not-too-far-away range of with 4-5 miles going west on I-4 from the CC (Downtown Disney area) and not more than 10-12 going east on SR-528 (i.e. airport area).

Shingle Creek is very nice and so is the JW Marriott/Ritz which are both near Shingle Creek and are only a few miles away from the CC.

We stayed there (and will again next year). Well worth the extra money.

Good gouge to know. Most hotels in Orlando give discounts from military, aaa, travel industry, and may be for the shot show.... but they might not due to such a large and popular event. A hotel within walking distance or a shuttle service would be best with all the event traffic + snowbirds + tourist wondering around playing bumper cars.

Booked my room around early February. Can't remember the name of the hotel, but it's half a mile or so from the convention center. I think my hotel is across the street from the "upside down building". I have to check the confirmation email on the office computer.
In 2007, I stayed at the HoJo a block from the SHOW. The HoJo was $100 but it was a dump. I saw it was on the official list again for about the same price this year, I passed on it.

In 07 I stayed at on that was probably 1.5 miles but was an "official" hotel list. Some sort of comfort inn family. It was on International Blvd right next to one of the onramps for the freeway. It was not a bad place and had free breakfast. Being a official hotel, it was next to a SHOT shuttle bus stop so I had no problems getting to the show (and back) as long as I was trying during the shuttle hours. Was around $65/night then. The family came with me and so the wife could pick me up or drop me off with the car when I was going outside the shuttle hours.

I guess the moral of my story: don't forget the SHOT Show shuttle bus service they run and you may very well find a good non-official hotel that is right next to one of the shuttle stops...

For 2009 we are staying at a "vacation club" place we have points at. Probably a little further a way but a LOT cheaper ;-) and nicer.

For the last Orlando SHOT Show, we stayed at Sheraton Orlando Studio City...which had a shuttle to SHOT.

The location and ease of getting around was great. The themed hotel expeience is lame...but I was there for a clean bed and a hot shower so it made little difference.

The shuttle picked us up from around back and it was probably a 15 minute ride to the show. Multiple stops to pick up other SHOT Show folks...but really not bad at all.

I think it was about $100/$120 a night?

Rob:
I stayed at the HoJo next to the Red Roof Inn. Actually, the HoJo is the hotel with the "red" roof, it has two buildings end to end, between your hotel and the convention center. It is very conveniently close to the show. The HoJo was a dump and I don't think the RRI is any better. But as you stated, you're just going to sleep there for two nights. The HoJo had inroom safe, so I could lock my pistols in the room.
