I sure hope there's a AK class in Nov.
I'm signed-up for it , and mailed my deposit months ago !!
The reason I joined this board was so I could sign-up for that class.
Anything change? Did I miss something?

I've been playing around with mounting my Ultimak rail, and am having difficulty exactly leveling the rail with the trunion. How did you guys line everything up perfectly?
Also, did you locktite the screws in for the rail?
Thanks!

Well, mys tuff came in and I got the rail mounted, the Vltor mount and G2 flashlight on, and I added an XS 24/7 big dot front sight as well. i woult be able to pick up a T-1 for a while, so the XS sights will be a good improvement over the standard sights. This is a great set up.
As far as getting my rail mounted, I had no trouble (that I know of....yet). i did not use lock tight. If I do have trouble after zeroing the sights and test firing, I wanted to be able to make adjustments easily if necessary.
Great thread!!!!!!!

I put mine on while watching TV and I had no issues with it fitting my 106FR, so I can't really help you on the fitting issue...
I did use blue Locktite on the screws, highly recommended.

Great, now I have to go put locktite on a couple of them.
FYI, even I found them easy to install, and I am far from mechanically inclined. They were a perfect fit on the SAM-7 Carbine and SGL20. Just remember to leave a little spacing at both ends... You don't fit them snug.

Sorry to bother you Templar, but I had an aimpoint question. I know you didn't show this setup, but do you think the vltor mount would have had any problems being paired up with the comp M2? I'm interested in setting up a rifle like yours, but I was thinking of going for an ultimak setup using a g2 in a vltor offset mount with an aimpoint C3(H1 is just a bit too costly for me) behind it.

I honestly don't know off the top of my head, I'll have to check for you with what I have. The LaRue off set light mount really didn't work that great with the M2, and I have my doubts it would work all that great with the Vltor light mount.

That's a good enough answer for me. I just thought I'd ask since I ran into the problem of getting a red dot too big for an ultimak before(found a workable solution in that case) and I didn't really want to make the same, expensive mistake again. Maybe I'll use a ultimak and c3 and go take a look the offset mount ggg uses since I could use a tall scope ring to get the light further from the aimpoint. http://www.gggaz.com/index.php?id=50&parents=89,164
That or I could look at the barrel mount MFI makes.

Mines, that's the standard US produced version of the Russian AK-100 series folding stock that is produced by K-Var.
Same length of pull as the standard AKM/AK-74 fixed stock, but it folds to the left of the receiver for storage or transport.

I guess my memory could be wrong, but I could have sworn that the instructions with the ultimak dissuaded the use of loctite. Oh well, I'll get back in there at some point.

I didn't use it on either of mine, but if Templar recommends it, he does so for a reason.

Hey Templar,
I just picked up my new SGL21 and I want to put on an ultimak gas rail with an aimpoint micro. When I was looking online for prices on the ultimak I read that the lower handguard will need to be modified to fit with the ultimak on. Can you tell me what I will need to do to modify my handguard? Im new to all of this so any detail you can provide would be appreciated.
Also out of curiosity, I see you are using a 5.56 Arsenal AK and wondered what made you choose it over 7.62 or 5.45?
Thanks!

I had no issues with mounting the Ultimak gas tube rail to the SLR-106 with the K-Var polymer handguard, no mods were needed, and you should be GTG with the K-Var handguards on you Saiga.
The SLR-106 was the first of the 'modern' AK's that Arsenal put out, it's a clone of the Russian AK-102.
If I were getting another one to modernize, I'd go for the Arsenal SLR-107CR mid length and SBR it.
Hope that helps.

Once the ultimak is mounted on the rifle, do you ever need to take it off for maintenance or does it sit on there for the long haul?

Sits on there for the long haul. You can still clean it easily with a 20 ga. shotgun bore brush and rod with solvent.
