The wait begins

I just saw that the DOJ cashed my $200.00 check for my SBR today. How long can I expect for the return of the Form1?

Jack

2-3 weeks typically.

2-3 weeks? Try 2-3 MONTHS. The short wait times of a year ago are long gone. My last two transfers, both within the last 6 months +/- have taken 3 months each.

Unless Form 1s are on such a different path than Form 4s.

I just got a Form 1 and a Form 4. The wait was 10-12 weeks. They are very backlogged right now.

Well, for me that's good news and bad news. It's good news because I had a local gunsmith do my engraving and they screwed it up . Ugly and they chipped paint like crazy. So, now I sent it to a place to have it filled and then to Orion for engraving. Both have backlogs. So, maybe it'll be done and back before the paperwork is back.

It's bad because I just sent my paperwork to the CLEO last week. They take about a month. So, I should have it back by...say...mid-Augustish. Then I'll send it into the BATFE for the long haul. I've heard from a lot of folks lately that it's taking them 10-14 weeks. Oh well. Guess I'll stock up on ammo, mags and accessories in the mean time.

1. Your local so-called gunsmith would have bought me a new receiver. If you advertise those kinds of services and jack it up, that's his problem

2. Most people that I know have said that the CLEO signature was a few days at the most and in some cases they were able to go down and get the signature themselves.

3. Another reason for me to do an NFA trust when I get back.

Haha!
A friend of mine just did a SBR and got the approval just a few weeks ago, his was a total of 8 weeks, it was almost exactly 3 weeks after cashing his check.........YMMV.
I think it all depends on your particular examiner and how much that person is working on. Some are busier than others.

Just for a recent reference, my last Form 1 was mailed on 04/23/08 & returned on 06/18/08. Right around 7 weeks door to door via the corporation route.

Cheers

1. Went that route and they said no. I said no business from me in the future.

2. Don't know where you are, but CLEOs across the US tend to vary in the amount of time they take to approve. The same day or a few days? Not where I am. The County Sheriff is the only CLEO who will sign. Had my stuff for a week already. In fact they send you a form to fill out. The form had a cover sheet reminding you that they do this as a courtesy and that they aren't alotted funds for the personell to do it, so they do it as they can get to it.

3. DITTO!! Any future NFAs will be purchased through a Trust. D'Oh!!

Don't individual approvals take longer than trusts too? That will be a factor for jackinfl.

It varies. There were stories for awhile that BATFE was securing attorneys to ensure that the trusts they received met the legal requirements for the state they were from. I believe there were a couple of people on TOS or elsewhere that got their Willmaker trusts rejected.

UPDATE

I called NFA and they said my application went pending on 8/19/08. What exactly does this mean?

That means that the paperwork was typed up and put into their system.

Now it will actually start processing. Depending on your examiners work load you have 2-8 weeks of a wait.
