Question Please help a NFA newbie

Forgive my ignorance, but, I'm having a hard time understanding the SBR NFA rules.

Here's the deal. I ordered a spikes lower, and registered it as a pistol. At the time, I was under the impression an SBR was considered a pistol - live and learn.

So, can someone PLEASE help me understand what I'm going to need to do to get my NFA stamp for a SBR, and change the registration of my lower from pistol to SBR?

I've got a noveske 10.5 upper on the way, I'd like to handle this asap as I have heard it usually takes like 8 weeks to get the NFA thing dealt with.

I live in TN if it matters. And whats the deal with the "trust"? what are the advantages of doing the SBR that way?

Thanks so much.

I won't attempt to answer all of your questions but I can give you a quick response to the "Trust" question.

To me, one of the main post approval benefits of going the trust route is that the NFA item can be legally possessed by more than one person if you've named multiple people as grantors/trustees.

It can also help avoid problems if something happens to you and you have a boatload of registered NFA items, in that it can legally direct the items to be temporarily transferred to an adult relative or other person if you have minor children.

It depends on your state law as to whether it has to be legally filed (to actually be a valid legal document)with a state/county entity such as the chancery court where you live, or whether being notarized is sufficient.

There are plenty of others here that are knowledgeable in this area, just search through the pages in the the NFA forums of M4C.

You can Google "NFA trust" and other variations of this and get additional info as well.

Hope this helps.
