Witness Marking Utensils for Marking Receivers

Could someone tell me exactly what kind of marking utensil is used for making the witness marks on the fasteners on an AR??
I'm sure you've all seen those little witness marks that are seen many times on AR receivers, to show IF a screw ever comes loose, right? I frequently see these witness/hash marks on Aimpoint fasteners, optic mount fasteners, and BUIS fasteners. Sometimes I even see where guys have used the same marking utensil to number their mags. (usually aluminum mags, but I'm not sure if this marking utensil would work on PMAGS or not? I bet it might though).
Now I THINK I have seen these witness marks in BOTH white AND a light-bluish color maybe? It's almost an "aqua" color I think? Not sure. I know for a fact I've seen white, and some sort of "bluish" color. ?
What kind of marking utensil is used for this purpose? I originally thought it might be some type of paint marker, but I'm not so sure that's what is being used???

Marking devices

Paul,

Go to your nearest craft shop ( A.C. Moore ) around here and buy yourself a paint pen. The three I have in aqua blue, white and red are actually made by Painty. Sharpie is another manufacturer, they last fairly long and the witness marks hold up pretty well to cleaning agents. I try and buy the fine point pens they seem to work a little better when witness marking. Hope this info helps and have a Merry Christmas.

I have used Testors Red Enamel Paint Markers for years. They can be had in several different colors. I usually get them from a Michaels craft store.

Yes, thanks guys. I really like the "cool blue-ish" color that I see in SWAT alot. I think Pat Rogers usually shows this particular color in his articles. White is fine, but for some reason I like that cool blueish, and was wondering if anyone knew what that color was? Guess I'll try a few out. Nothing wrong with white though...

That would be a Sharpie paint pen in Aqua Blue & can be purchased at Jo Ann Fabrics. Testors model paint works very well too.

I too use a paint pen, to make witness marks and number my mags. I have been using red, because it's high contrast makes it pretty easy to tell at a quick glance if something has moved.

You can find a Painter's Opaque Paint Marker by Elmers at Wal-Mart in the craft section. It's got both a fine line and a medium line end, available in different colors, and is acrylic paint. Works fine and alcohol will take it off if it doesn't sit too long. Hardly costs anything either.
