Cormac McCarthy's "The Road"
I know that this book was mentioned by a number of us in the book threads. I didn't realize that it was going to be made into a movie too. From the trailer, there are some definite discrepancies from the book that I already don't care for (like an inference regarding global climate change), but otherwise looks like it may be decent

"I'll kill anyone that touches you, cause that's my job"
GREAT line.
The wife shouldn't be in the movie so much though. Kind of figured when I read it and heard that it would be a movie that they'd have to make her have more of a role.
Interestingly, it was No Country that made me appreciate a director's adaptation of a book more because No County was TOO in line with the book. I've really started to appreciate the ways that movies deviate from the books more and more. Maybe The Road will be one of those.

If I recall correctly, there were a number of flashbacks in the book where he talked with the wife. I would assume that's what we are seeing in the trailer, though I'm sure you're right that they still took some liberties. The reason I am inclined to believe flashback though is that in the trailer scenes in which he is talking to her, note that he is in much better shape: beard shorter, not as disheveled and dirty.
And in most of the trailer scenes where he's running around with the kid, she's nowhere to be seen.

Interesting comment. There's very little I would have wanted changed about the NCFOM film, and my changes probably would have only brought it closer in line with the book.

I will be surprised, no matter what the movie turns out to be, if it evokes as much feeling from me as the book did. It was so strange to keep reading "Papa" in the book. My 9yo daughter and 6yo son call me Papa. It was strange to read that and hear my son in my head.

I LOVED that the movie very was very close to the book...unfortunately I can't count the number of people I talked to who didn't get it. It seems every adaptation has to be dumbed down for the masses. Don't even get me started about Watchmen.

According to the review in Esquire. all that Day After Tomorrow stuff is NOT in the movie. It's unclear also how much Charlize Theron is actually in the movie...that may have been most of her screentime.
Some more info here: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/41083 and a link to the trailer...

One thing about the book that I did not like at all was the complete lack of reference to what the source of the cataclysm was. I kept reading with the hope that at some point a character in the story would mention the...

Most people who go to movies based upon books/comics know nothing about the book/comic beforehand. That's why many books are re-released with new covers depicting a scene from the movie and "Now a Major Motion Picture!" splashed across the front.
In any event, I'm very much looking forward to the movie.

So, it's not just me then! That story should tug at any father of young children.

It sure did for me. I would watch my little girls playing and think what if... The book was a good read, my 17 year old son read it as well and loved it. I've read a number of his books and enjoy his style. Truthfully though I have a difficult time seeing this as a movie that the masses will want to see but hey, what do I know.

Agreed. For the same reasons. That book tore me up like no other.

Great book! I'm looking forward to the movie... might be changed up a bit but in order to sell it to the masses they need more visual action, more of a "love story" and things of that nature to entice a wider reaching audience. http://movies.yahoo.com/premieres/13...tandardformat/
