furniture for my AK

I have had a Romanian Wasr for a while and decided to give it a makeover. I plan on getting a yugo in the future but have shot my Romak many times and have had no problems. I ordered the Tapco Intrafuse handguard system and was wondering if anyone here has this system and if it works well or if it is crappy. Never had any Tapco stuff and decided to get rid of the beat up wood on my Ak. Also does the Tapco side folding stock or collapsible stock work well? Pics would be great to.

I've been looking and as near as I can tell, the only *decent* furniture out there is made by Kvar.

My GP1975 came with a Tapco buttstock and an unknown synthetic fore end. Take this with a grain of salt, but since we have similar receivers, expect some fitting on your end. The folks at Century are not comparing their guns side by side to a well fitted AR so they seem to get them out the door "good enough"...

Completely disassembling my gun, there is extensive rough filing to make the stock set 'fit'. My buttstock's holes are a little hogged out and casue the stock to shift forward and back about 1/16". Kind of annoying because I put considerable tension on my sling sometimes mounting the gun and it constantly shifts around.

K-Var, agreed, is the "decent" one I've seen but a bit more expensive. I expect to need to do some fitting when I pick up one their stock sets as well.

That being said, the AK is a really fun platform to run. It's really easy to get caught up in decking out an AR with ambi-this and big latch or extended-that. The AK platform has done wonders for my efficiency & appreciation of how well engineered the AR is bone stock.

A little $$ goes a long way with one of these guns too so enjoy it.

KVAR....

Recently added a NATO length plum buttstock and rest of the furniture to a bulgy AK 74. It all fit quite well , zero issues. Kvar may not be cheap but decent quality is seldom cheap.

If you're lucky, maybe k-var will have another funriture sale. A little while back, I was able to get a stockset with us made grip and buttstock with bulgy hanguards for $40. They now have the same set for $80 which I guess isn't too bad of a price. Just remember that they don't come with screws from the buttsock, so you'll have to by those as well.

before...

after...

i do like the looks of the tapco... down sides so far are...
mags are a pain in the ass.. sticking with metal ones..
fore grip gets a lil on the hot side after a couple of mags..
had to modify fore grip a lil bit..lil bit of scraping out to fit.. nothing major...
rest is all good.. feels great firing her and very comfy lugging her around.. gonna get some heavier grain rounds, slap on my 1st gen night scope (yes yes i know 1st gen sucks, but i dont plan on being further than 75 yds on some hogs) so that will work well enough with an IR light.. love her to death and dont plan on changing anything.. hope this helps...

I would check with K-var, if you want to stay closer to a military style look,I am glad of the scope mounts on the side of most now for a scope or red dot.

Kingrabbit, How do you like the M4 stock om the AK ?I got to shoot a friends and we ended up getting a Nato length stock from Kvar. seem to work better for him .does it shoulder well for you?Do your hand guards have a heat shield inside them? If you can find some Bulgy (10) Marked mags they are some of the best.

no heat shield..that i noticed, wasnt really lookng when i put it together.. i will have to check.. i was was ot anxious to put it all together.. i usualy hold the mag when i shoot.. only noticed it was hot when i was done shooting and grabbed the foregrip for a hero pic, didnt have my gloves on and got a lil bit of an owie.. this was after dumping 6 mags rather quickly, dont plan on shooting like that again for a long while..might throw a broom stick on the front when i mount an IR light, not sure.. love the adjustable m4 stock.. seats well and works well with my size.. 5'8" with smaller length arms.. lol..
