Subsonic 5.56?

I've got a question. It seems the 5.56 gains the least from suppression of my calibers. The .22 is great. Even the 7.62 with subsonic ammo is good to go and sub MOA to 300 in my experience. Very quiet and all I generally hear is the sproooong of the bolt. A friends 9's work well.

So, what can be done to quiet the 5.56? Here is what I am thinking, tell me if I'm smoking crack! or just hearing a sonic crack too much! Could I load up a 75 or 77 grain bullet to 1000 or 1100 fps and then use a lightweight buffer and spring to get an M-4 to cycle with subsonic ammo? I don't want to mess with the port as I want to be able to return this to normal specs easily. Or even load the subsonic bullet and manually cycle if needed.

Thoughts..........

IMO 22 subsonic is just as good as 223 SS. You can get the 60 gr 22 subs.
22 is much cheaper to shoot.
I bought EBR 223 subs but don't shoot them much.

DISCLAIMER: This is all speculation. I have not done this. I don't know anyone that has. Be careful and work stuff up slowly. Don't mess with this. DONT TRY THIS AT HOME.

Hornady makes an 80 gr .224 bullet and Sierra has a few 80 and a few 90 grain .224 bullets. I would work with the 90 gr (or maybe 80 gr) and see if you can't come up with something interesting using a deep seating of the bullet. You would have to figure out a powder to use.

Again, DON'T DO THIS AT HOME

I like the disclaimer but we're thinking along the same lines. The ultimate goal is to get them to cycle in an AR.

The .22 subsonic at 60 grains sounds worth a look. Who makes those?

The 60 grain 22 LR is from Aguila.

Here is someone's review of it

Why not try a .300 whisper upper?

It is a possibility but the idea is to quiet the 5.56. I know the 7.62 can be silenced.

I was thinking the goal was to silence the AR15 platform, so that was what came to mind.

The "crack" didn't seem so annoying to me, but all I have shot is hypersonic .308 through a suppressor so it might be a much different sound signature and I wouldn't know. I just look at the idea of the subsonic .224 round and it reminds me of suppressing a subsonic 10mm; why not start with a .40 S&W in the first place?

If you're determined to stick with the current caliber, I hope you get your dilemma figured out. Please let us know what conclusion you come to.

Here is some loading data from the Hodgdon/Winchester Powder/IMR website.

I doubt this will cycle an AR but it is interesting to look at

55 GR. HDY FMJ IMR Trail Boss .224" 2.200" 4.0 1074
55 GR. HDY FMJ Hodgdon Titegroup .224" 2.200" 3.1 1064 4,000 CUP
55 GR. HDY FMJ Hodgdon Clays .224" 2.200" 3.2 1060 3,700 CUP
