The 2,000 Round Challenge

Originially posted on ToddG's Calibers forum. Posted here with permission from ToddG.

RULES

* Shooter must use a single pistol (distinct brand, model, caliber, serial number) for the entire 2,000 rounds. Pistol should be properly cleaned and lubricated before the test begins. Any brand pistol, stock or modified (please list all modifications), any caliber.

* Shooter can take as long as necessary (days, weeks, months) to fire 2,000 rounds through the pistol.

* The pistol cannot be cleaned, lubricated, or maintained in any way during the entire 2,000 round test period.

* Shooter can use any type of ammunition: factory, remanufactured, or hand loaded. Shooter can use as many different brands, styles, bullet weights, etc. as necessary as long as all ammunition meets the SAAMI specifications for the caliber of the gun.

* Shooter must report ALL stoppages, malfunctions, and/or parts breakages that occur during the 2,000 round test regardless of cause. This includes any such problems that are deemed "shooter-induced" or "ammunition-induced."

* If a stoppage, malfunction, or breakage may be ammunition-induced, the shooter can follow this procedure (but must still report the actual results with the original test pistol): if the round still has a bullet, powder, and undetonated primer the shooter can attempt to fire the round in a freshly lubricated and cleaned pistol of different brand than the test gun. If the round fails to fire in this second pistol which is clean, lubricated, and not of the same brand, then although the original stoppage or malfunction must be reported it will not count against achieving the "2,000 Round Challenge" success criteria.

DEFINITIONS

Stoppage: Any failure of the pistol to go through its entire cycle of operation. This could include a failure to feed, fire, extract, or eject. A problem qualifies as a Stoppage if and only if the shooter is capable of fixing the problem without the use of any tools, without disassembling the gun in any way (magazine can be removed), and the pistol is in firing condition in less than 30 seconds. For example, a stovepipe or failure of the slide to go fully into battery would be Stoppages. Added 21-Jan-08: Failure to lock back after the last round in a magazine is fired, even if the shooter believes it was caused by an improper grip, is considered a stoppage.

Malfunction: Any failure of the pistol to go through its entire cycle of operation and which requires the use of tools, disassembly of any part of the pistol, and/or takes more than 30 seconds to resolve, but does not require any parts replacement. For example, a dislodged spring or a front sight that falls off the gun would be Malfunctions.

Breakage: Any failure of the pistol to go through its entire cycle of operation and which requires parts replacement (springs, pins, locking block, anything) to resolve. For example, a broken spring or chipped extractor would be Breakages.

A pistol must fire 2,000 consecutive rounds without any cleaning or maintenance or additional lubrication without any stoppages, malfunctions or breakages to qualify as having met the "2,000 Round Challenge."

EXAMPLE
Quote:
Pistol: SIG P226R "Navy"
Caliber: 9x19mm
Ammunition: American Eagle 124gr TMJ Lead-Free; American Eagle 147gr TMJ Lead-Free; Independence Ammo 124gr FMJ
Dates of testing: 3-Jan-07 to 26-Jan-07
Total rounds fired: 2,183

Stoppages: zero
Malfunctions: zero
Breakages: zero

Notes:
Pistol had 22,140 rounds through it before the test began. This pistol had previously suffered one squib round and numerous problems related to Remington UMC "Leadless" ammunition failing to fire and severely fouling the gun. Pistol was detailed stripped, had all springs replaced, and properly lubricated before the test.

After the 2,183 rounds reported above, the gun fired another 1,182 rounds (total: 3,365) before I decided to lubricate it because the slide felt a little sluggish when I loaded a magazine and chambered the first round.
If you've previously performed this test and want to post your past results feel free to do so. I'm going to start this weekend as soon as I figure out which Glock to use...

In an effort to keep this thread for RESULTS ONLY let's put all questions, comments and other disuccsions in this thread: http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?p=523158#post523158

Got a couple others I'm working with but they're around the 1500-1700 round range. I'll post again when I get the round count up there.
And I also have a couple of recently acquired G34's to work with, and hopefully a used G17.

And, I have a couple of Sig P250's that are also getting close. The stoppages have been too numerous to mention though(such as 8 fail to extract in a range session with just under 250rds fired.....).

No stoppages of any kind were experienced during the 2,024 rounds; even the shotshell cycled the action correctly and ejected without a problem.

Pistol: Glock 19
Caliber: 9x19
Ammunition: Blazer Brass, Blazer Aluminun, AE, WWB (all 115/124 gr)
Dates of testing: Oct 26th - Dec 21st
Total rounds fired: 2,475

Breakages: 0
Notes: Pistol is a Gen 3 G19 that I use for EDC and train with weekly at least firing a couple hundred during my normal Monday night training group. Other reps were on weekends getting more trigger time. Just cleaned late Monday night after our last session and there was still a nice film of lube and not too much buildup on the feed ramp etc. I've been pretty impressed with it so far with a total round count approaching 12k mark without a single hicup (knock on wood).

  • Winchester White Box 147gr FMJ
  • Brown Bear 115gr FMJ
  • Fiocchi Extrema 147gr JHP
  • Winchester Ranger-T 147gr JHP
Dates of testing: April 2009 - August 2009
Total rounds fired: 2000

Stoppages: I had one stoppage.
Malfunctions: zero
Breakages: zero

Notes: I began this test as soon as I purchased the pistol, so the "break in period" was part of the 2000 round challenge.

The one stoppage occurred within the first 50 rounds I fired from the pistol. It happened with the 115gr WWB purchased from Walmart. It should be noted that at the time numerous people reported problems with WWB so I really have a hard time believing it was the solely "gun's fault".

The test was conducted at the height of the ammunition shortage, hence the array of different ammo.

Dates of testing: Dec 14th - Dec 30th
Total rounds fired: 1,476

Stoppages: 2
Malfunctions: 0
Breakages: 0

Notes:
Pistol was brand new from the Custom Shop. I stripped and cleaned it with SLIP 2000 762 degreaser and lubed it with SLIP 2000 EWL. Fired at NRA Range in Fairfax, VA and Gilbert's Indoor range in Rockville, MD. First 1,050 were at NRA and the last 150 rounds were the JHP's (flawless). The remaining were shot at Gilbert's. Had two Failure to Chamber/Feed at round 1450 (first round of the mag) and 1452 (third round of the mag), both were experienced by my shooting partner and not myself. I corrected the stoppages, took over, and continued to shoot with no problems. I suspect it was operator error caused by my Partner. I stopped the test because I wanted to go 2,000 flawless but will clean my pistol and try again this summer.

Dates of testing: 12/20/09 - 12/31/09

Total rounds fired: 2,003

Stoppages: 3 (983rds, 1348rds, and 1551rds) *one may be due to limp wristing by a Navy Female Sailor. Stoppage is a stooppage I guess.
Malfunctions: zero
Breakages: zero

Notes:
Pistol had close to 2500rds already through her prior to test. I work at a military shooting range (it was a 92FS and not a M9) so the test may be somewhat distorted as I wasn't the one that shot all 2003 rounds. Firearm gets rented out for military quals and recreational shooting.

Bought the pistol brand new. Wanted a real replacement for my XD40 and this was one hell of a choice. It fits me so much better, I can shoot it much better. I normally shoot 1000 or more thru my guns before I even consider carrying them, saw this thread and decided to just finish the other 1000rds off and end up shooting 2500 total. No problems at all.

Pistol: S&W M&P45 full size
Caliber: .45ACP
Ammunition: HSM 230gr FMJ, 185gr Rainier reloads, 185gr Golden Saber reloads, 230gr FMJ reloads using Vihtavuori N320 powder.
Dates of testing: December 15, 2009 - January 14, 2010
Total rounds fired: 2,081

Stoppages: 1
Malfunctions: 1
Breakages: zero

Notes:
The pistol was purchased NIB before testing began and was stripped, cleaned, lubed with Hoppes Lubricating Oil (it was the closest thing at hand), and reassembled before testing.

Stoppage occurred at round 490 while a fresh magazine was being inserted into the gun from slide lock. I manually released the slide with my thumb while my pinky was still on the magazine and it may have been me sequencing the reload wrong. I'm blaming the pistol anyway.

Malfunction was a squib stuck in the barrel. I subsequently tried very hard to blow my gun up.

The pistol sounds and looks like it is completely dry now. It probably is, and I blame low quality lube.

We did this at work once, took about 45 minutes or so.

Gun was a Glock 18 of unknown round count, seven shooters loading happy sticks as fast as we could keep up, gun mostly fired full auto, dunked into a bucket of water to cool it down at times.

Ammo was 124gr Blazer, two 1000 rounds cases fired, no malfunctions.

Recoil spring was thrown in the trash afterwards and a new one installed.

Ammunition: Blazer 180gr Al Case
Dates of testing: May 2007 - June 2007
Total rounds fired: 3200

Notes:
Ran three training classes over a four week period driving from AZ -> TX -> CA. Too busy to clean the gun because I was driving. During the test period the gun ran fine without cleaning or lube.

Said gun now has about 140k rounds through it. The rear receiver rails cracked at around 75k rounds because it was part of recall, receiver was replaced by GLOCK.

Dates of testing: Feb 20, 2010
Total rounds fired: 2000 (this test) / 100k+ (lifetime of pistol)

Notes: I stopped round-count on this gun somewhere in 2008 after passing 100k rounds. The only maintenance I have performed is replacing the recoil spring and all magazine springs. Slide, barrel and springs are cleaned with brake cleaner, plastic parts in Simple Green. Lube used is CLP. Gun is completely stock, save for the addition of Brooks A-Grips, and was purchased new by me in 1996.
