Why does LAV wear his sling this way?....

Hey guys I wanna ask this: Why does he wear his sling in a reversed technique like that? I'm aware that he's a cross dominant shooter (myself also). I'm not criticizing him, I just wanted to know the advantages of a possibly better technique for myself. I tried a search but came up dry. Sorry for the inconvenience. Thanks for any input.

Stay in the fight.

I'd assume that way if you switch to secondary weapon, you can drop the rifle to your reaction side and quickly and easily access your handgun and bring it to bear on your target.

If you keep the sling under your arm like that it lets you put the weapon at your side or on your back while you are using your pistol or need both hands to do something. It's a PITA to have your weapon just dangling bashing into your nuts and everything else. I believe that when he switches to his weak side he actually makes the sling longer and takes his arm out of it. Probably because weak side shooting is not the most important thing to look for in selecting and using a sling.

Probably for the same reason I do it that way: Because he is a Cross-Dominant shooter.

If you sling up normal, while shooting long gun lefty and pistol righty, when you transition, the rifle wants to hang over your pistol/holster. Sling up how he does it and the rifle will hang opposite your blaster.

Valid points. That's the initial reason that I thought. It removes the material from being in the way of your secondary. The thing that made me think twice, that there might be another reason is that I have seen him wear it in this manner even when he isn't wearing a pistol. Thanks alot.

Ding, ding, ding. LAV is a cross dominant shooter like myself. So much that he shoots long guns left handed and handguns right handed. Dominance varies in people. Mine is not so bad so I can shoot long guns right handed very well and still shoot handguns right handed as well. I can also shoot long guns left handed very well.

This is kinda a hijack so if you want this post out let me know.

Does LAV only shoot with one eye open? I am pretty bad cross retarded (really strong left eye but right handed). With rifle, I keep both eyes open, as with handguns and that has seemed to negate the need to shoot left handed. Is there something else to his technique/ reasoning that causes him to shoot lefty because of his eye?

LAV = MSgt. Larry A. Vickers, a trainer, consultant, gunsmith, and SME on this site. Oh, TV star now too.

Pics of LAV:

How does he shoot? Whenever I've seen him shooting a handgun with clear eye-pro it's been both eyes open. I assume it's the same with the carbeen.

Why does he wear the sling that way? To allow unfettered access to the secondary weapon, which he shoots right handed. It's an exceptionally efficient setup for transitions to the sidearm.

I've read about him but didn't know what LAV stood for. Not used to referring to people by initials.

You should always shoot with both eyes open if at all possible. But, depending on your level of cross-dominance, you will never be as fast shooting through your non-dominant eye, regardless of your sighting system (irons, RDS, magnified optic).

I shoot pistol and rifle with my left eye. I shoot rifle left-handed/left-eyed. I shoot pistol right-handed/left-eyed.

Who cares why? But half the people that see the photos here will start doing it now without knowing why, either.
