BUIS with TA31 ACOG?
I have a TA31 that is going to be put on a recce I'm building. Just to get a feel for it, I put it on my BCM 14.5" upper and the eye relief is so short it has to go on the very last slot just for me to get a clear sight picture. This pretty much rules out any sort of BUIS for this rifle.
In Iraq I had a fixed FSB and carried my carry handle in an a-bag attached to my body armor. Obviously, this isn't Iraq but this gun is going to be my PSD/SHTF/#1 gun weapon and it needs to have all the capabilities which means I'd like a BUIS ready to be flipped up if the optic goes down.
Do I have any options, aside from carrying a rear BUIS on me and mounting a front BUIS?

I have my BUIS on the last slot, with the ACOG right in front of it.
ACOG's on a QD mount in case the three sights on the ACOG (rain sight, Docter, ACOG) go down.

Two easy solutions:
1- Collapse the stock one or two positions to allow the 31 to bump forward enough to get a BUIS in there.
2- Get rid of the 31 and replace it with a 33 or 11. This would be my choice, since I have a reason beyond eye-relief for my stock position. As it is, there isn't anything the 31 does better than the 33 or 11, other than it is less bulky than the 11 and 1X more power than the 33 (which is not significant enough to worry about). I have talked to Trijicon Military Reps about it, and they recommended models other than the 31 when the USMC and Army were initially testing the 31 series. Unfortunately there was enough people with experience on the TA01 that were vocal enough to saddle us with an optic that does not best fit full spectrum warfare. Note that the SDO is a TA11. . .there are enough warriors with experience now to realize and vocalize the deficiencies of the 31 series- from reticle to mount.
2a- You could also go with a mid-range low-powered variable. One good thing about ACOGs is that they hold their value well for resale.

As F2S said, particularly #1 if you're not looking for a new optic. I've never comprehended the mindset behind getting a gun with an adjustable stock, then getting emotionally involved with a particular position (not saying you are, just that it's disturbingly common). It's a detent on a tubular piece of metal, not love...
Plus, if you're serious about wanting true BU capability out of those irons for an "oh-shit!" gun, ensure that the optic you own now (or the one you purchase to replace it) has an ADM, LT or Bobro throw-arm mount. Putting a BUIS on a gun that has an optic mounted that requires a tool you may or may not have and time you may or may not have to remove is a bit goofy if the presumtion is to be ready for an instance in which the optic goes TU and you need to dump it for irons.
Future Trijicon optics should come with Bobro mounts instead of the screw-knob mounts like the TA51, if they aren't already. That's a very positive step on their part.

Huh.
I hadn't heard about that change. Great news, good job Trijicon.

So the LaRue mount here would be the way to go? It is what I have on mine and it comes off quick and holds zero when I put it back on..

That works. LR, ADM, Bobro are what I think of as the "industry standard," because everybody that does throw-arms should be striving to match them for ease of use, zero repeatability, and customer support.
