What the SIG 556 should have been... almost
Early 556 with actual swiss parts and a new(ish) lower. Good enough for me. Green meanie.
Lack of rear sling mount solidarity with SteyrAUG.

Actually with the low sights, it's like lower 1/3 cowitness practically.

Armakraut, can I get some details on the irons you have on that? Who makes the rear and did you have to mod it to fit? It almost looks like it's part of the rail. Front sight looks like a standard sig.

I LOVE absolute co-witness - mine is mounted on an ADM co-witness mount. It's also mounted about 9" forward of the rear sight, too!

Swiss front, LPA / PSI picatinny rear sight. Very nice unit, not cheap (well, cheap compared to swiss prices) designed for shotguns with rails. Lower sights only work with the SIG buttstocks, on the AR stocks they aren't so comfortable.

A 556 Classic with Aurora front/rears and a Swiss fixed folding stock is what the 556 should have been and never was. The best feature of the 556 Classic is taking AR mags, no matter how far from the original the design strayed, the AR magwell is by far the best feature of the gun.

Should have had a rail with an original rear sight welded on the receiver and 551, furniture, like modern SIG's. Would have been better if they had done a 16 inch barrel with an integrated flash hider like some of the imports (IE 14.5, but completely solid).
It's really damn cool that they take AR mags though.

Love your setup. Here's how mine are setup...the 556 and 522.

Not really. Original 55X series mags lock together without clamps and the AR mag well eliminated that usage as well as the folding trigger guard.
If you have a paddle mag release like the original mag changes are almost as fast as the standard AR. Nobody complains about the AK not taking AR mags so I don't know why anyone should expect or want the SIG rifle to take them.
Honestly before the development of P mags, by comparison AR mags are crap. SIG mags are far superior in quality to most AR mags.

I never had problems with the old AR mags.... when I used them in rifles other than an AR.
You can't even convert a SIG 556 to the 55X lower for under $2,500 anyway.

Pardon my n00b ignorance, I realize this is probably a stupid question, but... how do these different from the "current" Sig 556? I only ask since I really like the looks of the 556, though I've read enough negative points about it here to hold off on a purchase.
Thank you, and please don't yell at me too loudly

WOW! Am I hearing correctly? Sig AR mags are better than what kind of AR mags? Commercial or USGI? Or do you mean Sig 55x series mags are better then AR mags?
For me, I try to choose platforms that take either AR mags or AK mags. My AR's run Pmags and my AK's run AK mags. I don't like collecting alot of proprietary mags, I like to keep my logistics simple. For instance, my SAR4800 .223 takes AR mags. I chose it over a Galil simply because it took AR mags (and I prefer FAL's anyway).
If Sig had brought a 55x series to the USA that took only the Sig proprietary mags, I'd have taken a harder look at the 556. Same with the MSAR, I held off on it until the E4 came out.

No I meant the 55X SAN mags. For all I know SIG AR mags are crap like everything else they made these days.

In that case, why did you buy a AK at all? It is a proprietary magazine. And that is kinda my point, that not every rifle should run a AR magazine. FALs also take a proprietary magazine btw.

Somehow, I don't see these guys ever being willing to trade their guns for a 556

They don't have to pay for them, but they do look like they'd pay at least one franc for a rifle 4-7 inches shorter.
People in Canada actually buy SIG 556 lowers because the AR mags are cheaper and easier to get outside of Switzerland. Just the way of the world.

True, but I'm sure they're happy they aren't having to haul around the Stg-57 the way their dads and uncles did.
Another reason Canadians try to get their hands on SIG 556 lowers is that they can use 10 rd. AR-15 "pistol" magazines vs. being restricted to 5 round rifle magazines.
