Need info on Colt AR-15A2 Sporter II

I have a Colt AR-15A2 Sporter II serial number SP 340XXX. It has the large pin receiver (front pin has a screw), a slabside lower, foreward assist, and A1 sights. Barrel is marked C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7.

I got this gun in a trade for a Smith 640 plus $100 (I started to distrust the ILM after doing some research). The rifle has had better days, and I was told that apparently this was an LEO gun at one time (has some kind of name or agency marking on the stock).

I out 250 rounds or thereabouts on the day I picked it up, and ever since then, it has resided in my safe. I was thinking about selling it in order to fund another AR project. Before doing that I was hoping for some info on this model. Apparently the Sporter II models only came with A2 sights, which makes this rifle a bit of an anomaly.

If somone could give me a roundabout number as to more or less what it could be worth, and mabe some background information I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

It is basically worth $800 to $1000 depending on how bad somebody wants it.

The slabside lower is an impediment to getting it sold, along with the PD markings in the stock. I don't know if you can remove the markings with acetone or not. They look painted on, in which case they can be removed with acetone.

That gun is factory. It came like that with the A1 sights. It is a 6400, not to be confused with the current 6400 which is a carbine.

If it had A2 sights, it would be a 6550 or a 6551.

Personally, I would get rid of it on gunbroker and get something more up to date.

You could probably sell that thing pretty easily to someone in NY or MA for use as a donor receiver. They can get an adapter to allow the use of standard uppers with it.

Templar is right on - other than "Colt" collectors value and its "pre-ban" worth in the restrictive states, thats it.

I am sure you can get a grand based on the markings and that its a Colt. You really never want to remove agency, car-touche, or any markings that can give the gun history.

Non factory markings are a detriment to the value of the firearm.

I want to thank everyone for the advice and opinions. ALL of it has helped me.

I went ahead and made an ad for the rifle pointing out that I prefer a FTF OR a sale to NY/MA since they have to get Pre-Ban rifles to get all of the features we take for granted.

Looks like I have a buyer from NY (good for him) and I will have more funds for my little project.

Thanks again guys.
